GMC Hummer EV Pickup Buying Guide: Cost, Reliability, and the Best Years to Buy

by Clifford Atiyeh

After General Motors discontinued Hummer in 2010, no willing buyer would touch the brand. An American name once proudly associated with the Gulf War and Arnold Schwarzenegger had become a mockery of everything gone wrong for GM during its bankruptcy, a recession, and sky-high fuel prices. In 2020, GM confirmed it was reviving Hummer as an electric vehicle and a year later revealed the new Hummer EV Pickup as a GMC model with 1,000 horsepower, DC fast charging on an 800-volt architecture, and more off-road capability than the old H2.

Beyond its supercar statistics, the GMC Hummer EV Pickup truck was meant to be a mission statement for the company’s Ultium powertrain and chassis destined for all future EV trucks and other new vehicles with electric power.

Its limited production—capped by low demand for electric trucks—makes the Hummer EV Pickup a rare sight on U.S. roads to this day, even when compared with the Rivian R1T, the Ford F-150 Lightning, and the Tesla Cybertruck. Like the Tesla and the Rivian, and along with the GMC Sierra EV, the Hummer EV Pickup is part of a special class of very fast, oversized, and expensive trucks that are impractical for most buyers. And just like gas-powered Hummers of old, the Hummer EV Pickup also manages to be the heaviest and the most inefficient. The GMC Hummer EV SUV is identical in specification, and we cover that in a separate buying guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which GMC Hummer EV Pickup years are the best?

While all models are capable of software updates that can improve performance, electric range on a full charge, and add features, only those built from the 2024 model year have over-the-air updates that don’t require a dealership visit. They also have improved batteries and powertrain tweaks that cannot be applied to older models.

Which GMC Hummer EV Pickup years are the worst?

Avoid the 2022 Edition 1, which was the only trim offered in the debut year. Battery failures on many pickups required a full replacement, and this could apply to existing models on their original batteries.

Is a used GMC Hummer EV Pickup a good deal?

Yes—relatively speaking. For a "supertruck" that, in most model years, retailed for more than $100,000, a used Hummer EV has better-than-average resale value and compares well in terms of performance and capability to electric trucks such as the Tesla Cybertruck and the Rivian R1T.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Impressive acceleration and roadholding
  • High maneuverability
  • Unique style

Cons:

  • Extremely heavy
  • Very inefficient
  • Sub-par interior materials

GMC Hummer EV Pickup Generations

GMC Hummer EV Pickup First Generation (2022-Present)

The Hummer EV Pickup is a four-door convertible electric pickup truck with a five-foot bed and an unusual body style matched only by the gas-powered Jeep Gladiator. The giant tires, four-wheel steering that can move the truck sideways, an air suspension system that can raise the ground clearance to a staggering 16 inches (that function is known as Extract Mode), and brick-like styling that evokes the original military HUMVEE are all standard.

Along with the Hummer EV SUV, the GMC Sierra EV, and the Chevrolet Silverado EV, the Hummer EV Pickup has the industry's largest battery—so large that battery itself weighs more than a Toyota Corolla. As a result, the vehicle is so absurdly heavy (9,600 pounds) that it can actually sink and get stuck in the off-road trails it is supposed to traverse. Yet belying its extreme mass—which is greater than the heavy-duty Sierra 3500 HD—the Hummer EV Pickup can accelerate to 60 mph in less than three seconds. Braking, however, is poor and requires long stops at high speeds.

For 2026, the Hummer EV Pickup comes in two trims with minor updates. The Hummer EV 2X trim has two electric motors that can instantly adjust the torque split front to rear, air suspension, and a very short final drive ratio to multiply torque by up to 9,900 lb-ft at the axles. Output from the motors and the 170-kWh battery is either 570 horsepower or 635 horsepower with the Extreme Off-Road Package, which includes a launch control called Watts to Freedom. Estimated range is either 316 or 300 miles, with charging up to 300 kW. Modular Sky Panels on the Infinity Roof can be stowed in the front trunk, which has just over 11 cubic feet of storage. The GMC MultiPro tailgate, which opens in six different ways, is standard along with the ProGrade Trailering System (extra camera views for the cargo bed and hitch), four-wheel steering with CrabWalk (which enables sideways movement), and 22-inch wheels on Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires.

Standard spec includes a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google Maps, Assistant, and Play store. Unlike most GM electric vehicles running this system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are supported. A Bose 14-speaker stereo, three years of Super Cruise driver assistance technology (hands-free driving), heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, three-zone climate, 360-degree cameras, wireless phone charging, cooled front seats, OnStar, and a 12-way power driver's seat are all standard, while interior color schemes include the lighter Lunar Horizon and the darker Lunar Shadow. Smaller 18-inch wheels on mud terrain tires, along with a spare tire carrier in the bed (there is no spare tire), are optional. Front and rear electronic locking differentials are also optional. Super Cruise now has a lane change function that can work with an active route in the navigation.

The Hummer EV 3X trim level adds a third motor for up to 830 hp and 312 miles of range. Opting for the 24-module battery pack (exact capacity is undisclosed) allows 1,160 hp. For 2026, GMC modified the powertrain software and various hardware bits to improve acceleration (down to a claimed 2.8-second 0-60 mph time). Bi-directional charging is now available through a home-mounted inverter sold by GM Energy, which allows the Hummer EV Pickup to power an entire home. Two paint colors, Coastal Dune and Auburn Matte, and three interior color themes (bright red, an olive, and dark brown) are newly available. A new King Crab mode allows the rear wheels to turn up to 10 degrees opposite the front wheels to aid with low-speed maneuverability, which is a greater angle than previously allowed. The 2026 Hummer EV Pickup Carbon Fiber Edition adds 22-inch carbon fiber wheels, a red and black interior, a black front skid plate, a matte gray paint, and carbon fiber mirror caps.

At the time of writing, MSRPs started at $96,600 for the 2X and $104,700 for the 3X. Fully loaded trims could top $130,000.

For 2025, the only changes were two new exterior colors (Solar Orange and Graphite Blue Metallic). For 2024, GMC introduced a lower trim, the 2X, with two motors instead of three, while offering an optional 24-module pack on the 3X for an estimated 381-mile range (estimated by GM, as the Environmental Protection Agency has no record of it). For 2023, the only change was the 3X trim, which came without the Edition 1's extra equipment and with more exterior colors. For 2022, in its debut year, the Hummer EV Pickup was available only as the Edition 1 with three motors, 1,000 hp, and all the off-road features. It was fully loaded, only came in white, and was available in very limited quantities.

Average list prices on CarGurus for all model years of the Hummer EV Pickup were just under $81,000 at the time of writing. Average list prices range from $72,000 to $86,000 for the 2022-2025 model years.
