What’s New for the 2026 Toyota GR Corolla

Lots of refinements under the skin make the 2026 Toyota GR Corolla a better car than the 2025 version. Toyota stiffened the GR Corolla’s chassis and body shell with so much extra adhesive that it’s measured in feet, not inches. There’s also an extra air intake duct that leads cool air into the engine compartment, which helps keep the engine operating at the proper temperature, no matter how heavy the driver’s right foot may be.

Design

The GR Corolla looks fast even when it’s sitting still, with an angry fascia highlighted by a squat blacked-out lower grille opening and boomerang-shaped headlight clusters. Bulging fenders accentuate the car’s wide stance while the triple tailpipes at the rear echo the GR Corolla’s uncommon three-cylinder engine. All 2026 GR Corolla models feature what Toyota calls a bulge hood with functional gloss-black air vents.

Powertrain

The 2026 Toyota GR Corolla’s turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine belts out 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque—impressive figures from such a small unit. Power is routed through an advanced all-wheel-drive (AWD) system with an adjustable torque split through either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Cars with the automatic transmission include launch control, a system that maintains a set engine RPM for hard launches and is designed specifically for track use.

Drivers who want to practice their drifting skills can send up to 70% of the GR Corolla’s power to the rear wheels using Toyota’s GR-Four AWD system. A 50/50 torque split option is available for gravel or when maximum traction is the order of the day, and a base 60/40 split handles normal street driving. Track Mode continuously monitors road conditions and driver inputs, adjusting torque from front to rear as needed.

2026 Toyota GR Corolla Preview - interior

Interior

GR badge or not, this is a Toyota Corolla hatchback underneath, which means it’s not exactly dripping with luxury trimmings. The GR Corolla’s interior is nonetheless well-appointed with sporty features, including a grippy steering wheel and sports seats, push-button start, and aluminum pedals. Opting for the Premium Plus trim level brings red contrast stitching. There’s a good amount of room for occupants in the front seats, but the rear seat isn’t what we’d describe as roomy.

Technology

The 2026 GR Corolla comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system mounted high on the dashboard, where it’s easy to see from the driver’s seat. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, as is Amazon Alexa capability. In addition to the dash-mounted screen, the GR Corolla uses a cool, customizable digital gauge cluster with a big tachometer front and center. A head-up display is standard in the Premium Plus model. A JBL Premium Audio System comes with the Premium Plus trim level and includes eight speakers in the cabin, plus a subwoofer in the luggage compartment, and an Active Sound Control system that pumps extra engine noise into the cabin.

Safety

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard in the 2026 GR Corolla and includes the automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, traffic-sign recognition, and high-beam assist. GR Corolla models with the eight-speed automatic transmission also get full-speed adaptive cruise control that can gently brake the car if it senses a person or object ahead or for upcoming curves.

The GR hatchback hasn't been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as a separate model, but the current Corolla hatchback received a Good rating in all IIHS tests except for the updated side test, where it received an Acceptable rating. The Corolla also received a five-star rating from NHTSA.
