2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Preview - summary

What’s New for the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

The Subaru Crosstrek was completely redesigned for the 2024 model year-though when this third-generation model appeared, there was something missing, and it was the previous generation's plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant. That all changes with the 2026 Crosstrek, as the Hybrid rejoins the lineup with more power and likely improved efficiency, but without the plug-in capability.

Design

There's very little to distinguish this new Hybrid from its standard Crosstrek sibling, besides a few badges affixed to the body. As such, it looks more like a lifted wagon than a typical crossover SUV. It appears to ride higher than other SUVs, and it has 8.7 inches of ground clearance to give it the off-road credentials that Subaru is known for.

That rugged personality is further enhanced with black plastic fender surrounds and a sturdy roof rack that can haul everything from mountain bikes to an overlanding platform. Two exterior colors are exclusive to the Hybrid: Sand Dune Pearl and Citron Yellow Pearl. They're complimented by unique 18-inch dark gray alloy wheels.

Powertrain

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid features an all-new hybrid powertrain that combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder horizontally opposed ("boxer") engine with two electric motors that are powered by a 1.1-kWh lithium-ion battery. Together, they produce 194 horsepower, which is 12 hp more than the non-hybrid Crosstrek and 46 hp more than the previous-generation Crosstrek Hybrid.

Unlike the last Crosstrek, this model is not a plug-in hybrid, and it should meet or exceed its predecessor's hybrid fuel economy (not including the EV range that was possible). All-wheel-drive (AWD) is standard and uses a traditional driveline instead of a separate electric motor just for the rear axle—the way some other hybrids have.

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Preview - interior

Interior

You'll need a keen eye to spot the interior differences between the Hybrid and standard Crosstrek. One of the few distinctions is in the digital instrument panel, as there's a specific information page that displays the power flow between the engine, the battery, the electric motor and generators, and the wheels. Materials quality isn't as refined as rivals', but that's by design. The Crosstrek uses more durable plastics to withstand the more punishing conditions that it was intended for.

Technology

Just like the non-hybrid Crosstrek, this model comes with a large 11.6-inch infotainment touchscreen that is packed with features and is easy to operate. Almost every function is operated via the touchscreen, but Subaru smartly anchored the climate controls at the bottom of the screen for easy access. The screen itself is easy to read at a quick glance, and responses to user inputs are immediate. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard.

Safety

The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid comes with Subaru's latest version of its EyeSight suite of advanced safety features. These include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and reverse automatic braking. These were mostly part of the previous EyeSight system, but the latest update gets you the warnings more quickly and in more challenging conditions.

In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the standard Crosstrek received strong scores, and we expect the Hybrid to follow suit.

Pricing and Release Date

Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but we should know closer to the fall 2025 on-sale date. Judging from the previous Crosstrek plug-in hybrid's price premium over a similar non-hybrid trim level, we don't think the 2026 model will be significantly more expensive. This is especially true when you consider that the new model isn't a plug-in. It also seems likely that the Crosstrek Hybrid will be offered in more trim levels than its predecessor, which was only available in the top trim.
