2025 Volkswagen ID.4 Preview - summary

What’s New for the 2025 Volkswagen ID.4

Changes to the Volkswagen ID.4 are minimal for 2025, following more significant updates last year. The new optional touchscreen made available for 2024 is now standard across the range, and one of the base trims gains standard cooled front seats. There’s now a Black Package of exterior styling upgrades available on some trim levels.

Design

The ID.4 has typical electric vehicle (EV) crossover styling that doesn’t much stand out amongst its rivals, which tend to have sportier looks. It’s shorter than Volkswagen’s compact Tiguan crossover, and sleeker as well. Base versions get 19-inch alloy wheels, while higher trims get 20-inch or 21-inch designs. New for 2025, S and S Plus trims are available with a Black Package that adds black door handles, mirror caps, and badging, and black-finished 20-inch wheels.

Powertrain

The ID.4’s lineup is split by powertrain. The ID.4 base lineup pairs a rear-axle motor, for rear-wheel drive (RWD), with a 62-kWh battery pack, yielding a combined 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque and a range of up to 206 miles.

ID.4 Pro models pair a rear motor with an 82-kWh battery, good for 282 hp and 402 lb-ft, and the lineup’s best range of up to 291 miles.

ID.4 Pro models are also available with all-wheel drive (AWD) by adding a second motor to the front axle. Output increases to 335 hp, though range drops to 263 miles.

2025 Volkswagen ID.4 - Interior

Interior

The ID.4 seats five, with decent space in both rows. Standard features include a combination of cloth and synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, and proximity keyless entry. Options include power-adjustable and massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic roof. Not much has changed inside for 2025, except that the base S version now gets cooled front seats along with the Pro versions.

Volkswagen offers good cargo space in the ID.4, with 30.3 cubic feet behind the second row and 64.2 cubic feet with the second row folded down. However, the ID.4 lacks a frunk. A hands-free power liftgate is available.

Technology

Last year, Volkswagen introduced a new 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system for Pro models, and this year, that system now comes standard across the lineup. Other standard features include a 5.3-inch digital information display, a seven-speaker audio system, navigation, voice recognition, Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and wireless device charging. Options include a nine-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

Safety

The 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 earned a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded top Good scores in three crash tests and a Top Safety Pick rating. The 2025 ID.4 comes standard with a rearview camera, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitors, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, front parking sensors, rear parking sensors, traffic-sign recognition, and park assist. A 360-degree camera system and adaptive headlights are available.
