What’s New for the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid Plug-In
The Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid Plug-In was last fully redesigned for the 2023 model year. This year, Mitsubishi adds more standard features to the list and also culls a couple trims from the lineup. Because it's a relatively small-volume vehicle in the segment, a tighter lineup and more standard features help make this Mitsubishi more competitive. It now features heated front seats, and the mid-tier SEL trim now gets a panoramic sunroof and a heated steering wheel. The Ralliart and SEL Platinum Edition are no longer available.
Design
This Mitsubishi has a lot going on, style-wise. It has a typical profile and stance for a compact crossover SUV, but as the underdog in the segment, Mitsubishi appears to want to stand out in any way possible. There’s a ton of chrome trim up front, and that treatment flows to the window trim and roof rails. That’s about as flown as it gets, though. Chrome roof rails are, well, certainly a choice. Angular alloy wheel designs only add to the choppy effect. The Black Edition package is a welcome bit of relative subtlety, as it tones everything down.
Powertrain
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV comes with the same powertrain across the lineup. It combines a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, two electric motors, a 20-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (which Mitsubishi calls an eCVT), and all-wheel drive (AWD). It’s rated for 248 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid Plug-In is rated for 64 MPGe (miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent) in combined driving in electric mode, and in gas mode, it should achieve 26 mpg combined. Furthermore, the 2025 Outlander PHEV offers 38 miles of all-electric range on a full charge, and it’s worth noting that it’s one of the only models in the segment capable of DC fast-charging. That can take the Outlander Hybrid Plug-In to an 80% charge in just about 38 minutes, while on a Level 2 charger, it takes about 6.5 hours to charge to full. The Outlander Plug-In Hybrid is quick off the line, thanks to its hearty torque, but it’s loud under acceleration.

Interior
If you haven’t seen inside a Mitsubishi in the past few years, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the 2025 Outlander Hybrid Plug-In's interior. It seats seven, though the third row is too small for adults to sit comfortably. Still, it’s nice to have a third row in this segment. The cabin design is modern and well-executed, with better quality materials than shoppers are likely to expect. Cloth upholstery and heated front seats come standard, and Mitsubishi offers options like synthetic or genuine leather upholstery, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a hands-free power liftgate. The Outlander Hybrid Plug-In can accommodate a maximum of 79.7 cubic feet of cargo with the second and third rows folded down, which is great for the class.
Technology
The 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid Plug-In comes standard with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, USB-A and USB-C ports, and a six-speaker stereo. Mitsubishi offers a 9-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, and a Bose premium stereo with nine speakers. The system is easy to use, and there are physical controls for some functions.
Safety
The 2025 Outlander Hybrid Plug-In earns top "Good" scores in the three crash tests that have been completed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not yet completed testing as of this writing. Mitsubishi equips the 2025 Outlander PHEV with a reversing camera, front and rear automatic emergency braking, front collision warning, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, lane-change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, a rear-seat alert system, driver-attention monitoring, and automatic high-beam headlights. Options include a 360-degree camera system, lane-departure warning, front parking sensors, a head-up display (HUD), adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, and traffic-sign recognition.
