Subaru’s practical, value-oriented midsize sedan stands out from the crowd due largely to its affordable pricing and standard all-wheel drive (AWD). Competitors include the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, and Kia K5.

What’s New for the 2024 Subaru Legacy
The Subaru Legacy is unchanged for 2024, following a refresh in 2023 that brought updated styling, new safety features, and minor changes to the engine lineup. This practical midsize sedan puts an emphasis on value, with an affordable base price, a long list of standard amenities, and standard AWD.
Design
The Subaru Legacy is a midsize sedan with seating for five and simple styling inside and out, although the 2023 refresh brought a somewhat more aggressive front end. The trim lineup consists of Base, Premium, Limited, Sport, and Touring XT trims. The Base comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, though 18-inch alloy wheels are standard across the rest of the lineup. Sport models get a rear spoiler and other styling accents.
Powertrain
The 2024 Subaru Legacy comes standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engine, rated for 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. Step up to the Sport or Touring XT to get a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated for 260 hp and 277 lb-ft. Both engines get a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and AWD. EPA ratings come in at 27 mpg city, 35 highway, and 30 combined for the base engine, and 23 mpg city, 31 highway, and 26 combined for the turbocharged engine.

Interior
The Legacy is spacious and comfortable with seating for five, though not particularly upscale. Standard features include cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, remote keyless entry, and a sole USB port. Higher trims can be fitted with power-adjustable front seats, push-button start, additional USB ports, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, heated front and rear seats, ventilated front seats, and a power moonroof. The trunk checks in at 15.5 cubic feet.
Technology
The 2024 Legacy’s base trim gets a pair of 7-inch touch screens stacked, with the lower screen controlling climate and vehicle settings and the upper screen housing the infotainment system with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All other trims get an 11.6-inch touch screen with an upgrade to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Safety
Safety ratings for the 2024 Subaru Legacy are mixed. Though the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded a five-star overall rating, the Legacy wasn’t as successful in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests. There, it received “Marginal” and “Acceptable” ratings in some tests, as well as top “Good” ratings in others. Subaru equips the Legacy with forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warnings, lane-departure warnings, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and a head-up display.
