The 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is an outdated subcompact crossover in desperate need of a refresh, and it’s a hard sell in a segment populated by the likes of the Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V, and the Subaru Crosstrek.

What’s New for the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
Nothing is remotely new for the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, aside from a new trim level. It’s part of a generation that debuted in 2011 and was last significantly refreshed in 2016. The main benefits to the Outlander Sport are its user-friendly infotainment system and long warranty coverage, but even its price isn’t compelling enough to make this a better option than most of its competitors.
Design
For 2024, Mitsubishi renames the Outlander Sport’s GT trim the SEL and introduces a Trail Edition trim with unique styling elements, but these moves do little to disguise this small crossover’s outdated exterior design and bland interior. Base S models feature 16-inch steel wheels, though 18-inch alloy wheels dress up most of the rest of the rest of the range.
Powertrain
Most 2024 Outlander Sport models are powered by a a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque, with standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The top SEL trim gets upgraded to a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, rated for 168 hp and 167 lb-ft. Neither is particularly impressive, though. EPA ratings for the smaller engine are 23 mpg city, 29 highway, and 26 combined; the 2.4-liter gets 23 mpg city, 28 highway, and 25 combined.
Interior
The Outlander Sport seats five passengers across its two rows, and as is typical for a subcompact SUV, most adults will be quite uncomfortable if they’re stuck in the back. Standard features include cloth upholstery and automatic climate control. Upgraded upholstery, heated front seats, push-button start, and remote keyless entry are optional. The Outlander Sport's cargo hold measures 21.7 cubic feet, though its rear seats fold down for a maximum of 49.5 cubic feet.
Technology
The 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport features a 7-inch touchscreen. It takes stepping up to the mid-range trim to get an 8-inch touchscreen that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wiping out any perceived value from the Outlander Sport’s ostensibly low base price. Bluetooth and a single USB port also come standard, and there are scant additional options.
Safety
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport an overall safety rating of four out of five stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the highest “Good” rating in two crash tests and the second-highest rating of “Acceptable” in a third test, though that doesn’t complete the full test regimen. Mitsubishi equips every Outlander Sport with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and automatic high-beam headlights. Options include blind-spot monitoring, lane-change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors.
