What’s New for the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid Plug-in

The Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid Plug-in was fully redesigned for the 2023 model year, so for 2024, the only change is that the top Platinum Edition trim replaces last year’s 40th Anniversary Edition trim. This Mitsubishi is based on the Nissan Rogue but powered by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain unlike anything offered by Nissan. Competitors include vehicles like the Toyota RAV4 Prime, though like most vehicles in the segment, that’s only a two-row crossover, and the Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid.

Design

As it’s based on the Nissan Rogue, both the regular Mitsubishi Outlander and the Hybrid Plug-in offshoot have a similar profile. However, despite sharing a basic shape, the Outlander PHEV has exterior styling that’s perhaps best described as "cluttered." Up front, this Outlander’s big grille is surrounded by headlights and body panels that suggest Mitsubishi’s designers didn’t really have a cohesive goal for this vehicle. The sides are fine, and the back is, like the front, too angular with too many visual distractions. That said, it’s a big improvement over the previous generation.

Powertrain

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV delivers smooth, ample power for everyday driving, though it can be loud under heavy load. Also, though its all-electric range is a nice benefit, its fuel economy ratings in hybrid mode are merely okay. This Outlander comes powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 20-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery that powers two electric motors, one in front and one in back, for standard all-wheel drive (AWD). A single-speed transmission puts power to the ground. Ratings check in at a hearty 248 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The Outlander PHEV is rated for 38 miles of electric range, and EPA ratings of 25 mpg city, 27 highway, and 26 combined.

2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid Plug-in - Interior

Interior

There’s plenty of room in the first two rows of this Outlander, but as in most small and medium three-row crossovers, those rearmost seats are best for kids only. The Outlander PHEV’s cabin welcomes with a pleasing design and mostly soft-touch materials on visible surfaces. The Outlander Hybrid Plug-In offers 12.8 cubic feet of space behind the third row, which opens up to a maximum of 66.2 cubic feet.

Technology

Every 2024 Outlander Hybrid Plug-In features an 8-inch touchscreen paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and voice recognition. Mitsubishi offers a 9-inch touchscreen, wireless device charging, a Bose premium audio system, and additional USB ports. Though the system isn’t quite as sophisticated as many rivals’, it supplies the key features expected by shoppers and is easy to use.

Safety

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hasn’t yet rated the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid Plug-In, though the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded top “Good” scores in the crash tests completed so far. This Mitsubishi comes standard with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warnings, automatic high beams, blind-spot warning with lane-change assist, a driver attention monitoring system, hill-start assist, rear automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. Options include the MI-Pilot system, a limited hands-free driver-assistance system based on Nissan’s Pro-Pilot Assist.
