Won't start after driving 15 miles or so

Asked by Tyrone Aug 26, 2017 at 03:53 PM about the 2004 Nissan Maxima SL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2004 Maxima will start normally but if I drive it 15 miles or so it will
turn over but will not even attempt to start. After it sits for a few hours,
it will fire right up and run fine. Also, if I drive 20 or so miles it will run
rough intermittently.

is it over heating? thats a big unknown . if so then check thermostat and heater core first. if not over heating i would be looking at sensors. perhaps the engine coolant temp sensor. sounds like it runs long enough to get hot or something on it gets hot then shuts off. good luck

Thanks Trent. The car actually does not appear to be running hot thought I question the reading on the gauge because most newer cars will give erratic reading if the cooling system is vapor locked. I will try and bleed the cooling system first to be sure there no air trapped and fill the system if needed. Hope it that simple.

I don’t have an answer for you but I have this exact issue, did you find a solution?

After installing a costly fuel pump, it turned out to be the crank shaft sensor. ~$500 for pump replacement versus the ~$70 to replace the crank shaft sensor. My mechanic was pissed when I came back for a refund for a failed repair.

I have a similar problem. Car starts cold but not when hot. Still not fixed after changing cam sensors, crank sensor, coolant temp sensor, throttle body, mass air flow sensor and fuel pump. Banging my head against wall for fix. Any other ideas?
