i own a 93 all wheel drive astro van. what's the trick to making it easier to get to the front left spark plug?

Have you tried removing the front left wheel and seeing if you can access it from the side? I was a mechanic in school and seem to remember trying this trick on vans but can't remember which model.

I remember using it on all sorts of cars with V type engines and rear wheel drive. Your rig fits the bill! I'd also suggest taking a look from underneath. I remember using ratchets with 3 extensions and jointed twice on some of them!
