The new Sierra HD brings all the work-ready capability of the Silverado, but it does so with a nicer interior and more upscale styling.

What’s New for the 2023 GMC Sierra 3500HD

GMC didn’t make any major changes to the Sierra HD heading into 2023, as the automaker plans a full overhaul in 2024. The same two powertrains and trims that were offered in 2022 are again available this year.

Design

The GMC Sierra HD is an imposing truck that sticks out even more when it’s covered in chrome, as the top trims are. GMC offers a variety of wheel designs and sizes, and many trims are available with dual rear wheels. The truck has a gigantic grille that provides cooling to the tremendous engines underneath, and some variants can be had with rugged off-road trim.

Powertrain

Two powertrains are available for the 2023 Sierra 3500HD. The base engine is a gas 6.6-liter V8 that produces 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to a six-speed automatic. The optional 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 comes is rated at 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque, and comes mated to a ten-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) comes standard, and buyers can upgrade to four-wheel drive (4WD). The truck is rated to tow up to 36,000 pounds with dual rear wheels and a fifth-wheel/gooseneck setup.

Interior

The Sierra HD will get an interior overhaul in 2024 to match the 2023 interior updates given to its light-duty counterpart. Finishes range from stripped-down and rugged to posh and luxurious, with top trims adding leather, heated and ventilated seats, and more. The truck offers cavernous passenger space, and some models get niceties like wood and metal accents. Even so, more than a hint of truck’s workhorse roots still shines through, even in the most expensive configurations.

Technology

A 7-inch display comes standard in the 2023 GMC Sierra 3500HD, but an 8-inch touchscreen is available. Both offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, USB inputs, SiriusXM radio, and HD radio. GMC offers a head-up display and upgraded audio systems, and its infotainment software is among the easiest to use on the market. The system can store different trailer profiles to change settings when towing different loads, and the GMC app offers more towing functions.

Safety

As a general rule, heavy-duty trucks aren’t exactly praised for their safety equipment, but GMC offers several advanced driver aids for the 2023 Sierra 3500HD. The truck is available with lane departure alerts, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, forward collision warnings, automatic emergency braking, and more.

Pricing

The base GMC Sierra 3500HD with a 6.6-liter gas V8 and RWD starts at $47,495. With options and configuration upgrades, the truck can reach near $80,000.
