The CarGurus verdict
The OG hot hatch gets in fighting shape while trying to stay with the times.
With its updated engine, revised suspension, and tech-forward interior, the latest iteration of Volkswagen’s legendary GTI looks ready to do battle with the Hyundai Veloster N as well as the upcoming Honda Civic Si and Subaru WRX. With regards to performance, the new GTI leaves almost nothing to be desired.

What owners say
Couldn’t be happier with this car. Been a lifelong fan of the GTI thr newest version definitely didn’t disappoint
April 8, 2024I just bought a 2022 GTI S 6-speed manual. Incredible handling (bordering on telekinetic!), a super-responsive, efficient engine and a competent and well-sorted clutch and stick. Perfectly spaced-out gear ratios and a powerband that gladly handles stop & go, commuting, and spirited driving with aplomb. For everyone who is concerned about the new Mk VIII interior . . . . the GTI S still comes with a volume/power and tuner knobs on the dashboard! The base S is a lot of value for the money and has all the creature comforts expected for a sport hot hatch. Another benefit - it is tuned and requires REGULAR unleaded gas!
July 27, 2022Performance on the car is sizeable compared to my prior MK7. The newer infotainment and menus have a learning curve to get used to in the absence of buttons/dials. So far, I am happy with my purchase and will continue to develop opinions further into ownership once I can tell more.

July 24, 2023SE auto drives and handles great. Comfortable, quiet and seems like its built well. Price is absurd. Controls are too - no knobs and so hard to use without taking eyes off the road. Kept me from the purchase.
