The 2022 Honda Pilot proves a family-hauling SUV doesn’t have to be boring. It has a strong V6 engine, a long list of standard safety features, and a spacious cargo hold that’s ready for any adventure. The current generation of the Pilot was introduced for the 2016 model year. It received a styling refresh in 2019. For 2022, Honda adds more standard tech and creature comforts to the Pilot. It also adds new Sport and TrailSport trims.
The Pilot provides three rows with seating for up to eight. Shoppers can select second-row captain’s chairs, bringing the seating capacity to seven. With the second and third rows folded, the Pilot provides a total of 109.2 cubic feet of cargo space. With just the third row folded, the Pilot offers up to 55.9 cubic feet of cargo space. With all seats in use, the Pilot provides 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats.
Trims for the Honda Pilot are Sport, EX-L, Special Edition, TrailSport, Touring, Elite, and Black Edition. The Sport is the new base trim and includes 20-inch alloy wheels, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, tri-zone climate control, and two USB ports. It also comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The EX-L trim adds leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, driver’s seat memory function, a power rear liftgate, a power moonroof, and USB ports for the second-row seating. The Special Edition features black 20-inch alloy wheels, black roof rails, wireless device charging, and a hands-free power liftgate.
The TrailSport is intended as a more outdoorsy trim. It features a lifted suspension, upgraded “rugged” all-season tires, unique 18-inch wheels, and styling touches exclusive to this trim. It also adds navigation to the infotainment system.
Moving up to the Touring pivots back towards road-going comfort and helpful features. It adds a cabin PA system to reach the back rows, a wall-style power outlet, and front and rear parking sensors. It also adds heated second-row seats, a rear-seat entertainment system, ambient cabin lighting, and a 10-speaker premium audio system.
The Elite comes standard with second-row captain’s chairs, heated-and-ventilated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, and a panoramic moonroof. The Black Edition is outfitted with content similar to the Elite’s and features unique black styling elements.
The Honda Pilot comes equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine. It makes 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent through a 9-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels or available all-wheel drive. The transmission is operated via Honda’s unique button-shifter center console layout and can also be manually operated via steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The front-wheel-drive Pilot has a Snow drive mode. All-wheel-drive versions provide Snow, Sand, and Mud drive modes. When properly equipped (including all-wheel drive), the Pilot can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
The front-wheel-drive Pilot returns fuel economy of 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined. The all-wheel-drive version returns 19 mpg city, 26 highway, and 22 combined. The TrailSport returns 19 mpg city, 25 highway, and 21 combined.
The Pilot comes standard with the Honda Sensing suite of driver assistance features. This list includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision avoidance, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Available driver assistance tech includes rain-sensing wipers and front and rear parking sensors.
Base MSRP for the 2022 Honda Pilot is $37,580. The EX-L trim starts at $39,810. The Special Edition has a starting price of $40,410, and the new TrailSport trim starts at $44,310. The Touring trim starts at $44,370, and the upscale Elite trim starts at $49,870. The range-topping Black Edition starts at $51,370. The Honda Pilot is backed by a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

I am disappointed the Touring model did not come with an automatic parking brake or a heated steering wheel like my Lexus. The 20 inch tires are kind of a silly idea. I would prefer a less low profile tire. The vehicle is a superb unit. However, having been used to real off-road SUVs, I wish I had stuck to another Landcruiser or 4Runner. I went for better gas mileage this time, and the vehicle does not meet my off-road requirements. However, it is a super vehicle for what it is. It is very quick and quiet on the road. I had a minor issue with the auto tailgate but the dealer promptly fixed it.Jan 22, 2023

I am very particular in what I require throughout my vehicle purchases…I had to have enough space for my family of 4 and definitely a sunroof which we now have. The fuel consumption is the only minor snag especially in today’s economy but not a deal breaker. Needless to say, I love my new 2022 Honda Pilot! Test drove the telluride and think it’s overrated. Seats were uncomfortable for big people and it seemed cheaply made. The Pilot is a solid sounding and spacey SUV and we are very pleased. We still have our 2005 Pilot and hope our new one ages just as well. May 08, 2022
