In 2019, BMW introduced the fourth generation of its midsize X5 crossover. For 2020, the X5 gets some important updates.
Both of last year’s trims return. The base xDrive40i package includes a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, enough to get to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. Meanwhile, the xDrive50i comes with a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 making 456 hp and 479 lb-ft, along with a 0-to-60 time of just 4.6 seconds. The xDrive40i and xDrive50i both include an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD).
For 2020, BMW introduces the M50i trim as the top performance option. It uses the same basic V8 and AWD system as the xDrive50i but ramped up to 523 hp and 553 lb-ft, plus a sport-tuned version of the 8-speed automatic transmission. The M50i blazes to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. You get an M Sport body kit, unique 20-inch wheels, an adaptive sport suspension, a specially tuned exhaust, uprated brakes, and a performance rear differential. Launch control and a driving mode that allows you to send all of the power to the rear wheels for maximum fun are both available. As of this writing, BMW hasn’t yet released official fuel-economy figures.
BMW will also introduce a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) trim, the xDrive45e. It incorporates a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine with an electric motor for 394 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, and comes in at 0.3 seconds slower to 60 mph than the gas-only xDrive40i trim. As of this writing, BMW hasn’t yet released official fuel-economy figures.
The base X5 comes with plenty of standard content: adaptive LED headlights, LED fog lights, power-folding mirrors, 19-inch alloys, 16-way power front seats, leatherette upholstery, a 10-speaker sound system, a 1-year Apple CarPlay subscription, a power liftgate, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, and a matching 12.3-inch infotainment system with navigation. Options include soft-closing doors, genuine leather, various wheel upgrades, keyless access, wireless charging, remote start, an air suspension, and laser-based headlights.
BMW includes a reversing camera, daytime pedestrian detection, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert on every X5. From there, you can tack on a head-up display (HUD), traffic-jam assist, evasion aid, adaptive cruise control, and a parking assistant. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluated the X5 last year and gave it top honors for safety.
BMW’s X5 remains an impressive midsize luxury crossover, competing against the likes of the Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Class.

I have had 2 X5 models(2017 & 2020) both were amazing to drive. But the 2020 really made me feel like I was driving in luxury. The exterior is sleek, and sporty. Even with 20 inch wheels the drive is soft. The interior coffee color was stellar, took it up a whole other level. There is a wide variety of safety features to turn on or off. There is a clear 360 view of the parking camera. Large screen for center console area. This model specifically also kept drinks warm/cold in the cup holder. My favorite part of the interior though is the accent lighting. The whole moonroof would light up and you could always slide back the shade if you didn’t want it. When making the change from the 2017 to 2020 model, we looked at many SUVs and it was very hard to compare to other makers. This was why we ended up with the same vehicle and will probably do it again when ready!Jun 20, 2023

Great build quality inside and out. Very comfortable. Performance is good. Gives respectable mpg for its class and engine size. Put it simply, Mercedes GLE with its 4 cylinder engine has the same mpg as X5 with its 6 cylinder engine AND X5 is faster.! Tech works well too. Jun 09, 2023

The handling is smooth, the modes are all customizable, the lights at night are so much fun that i wish they could be on in the daytime, too! The tightening seatbelt feature feels safe, the safety features in general are excessive, but if i were more hesitant or concerned about driving, they’d be a huge relief. The beautiful coffee leather interior is pristine & takes the vehicle a cut above; all the options make the drive feel like a real luxury. Only complaint is the console/personal assistant is much too complicated and difficult to find specific settings when I urgently need to adjust them—the “hey bmw” voice personal assistant really ought to be programmed to be helpful. As it is, that feature & the gestures the car picks up on my hands making, have triggered actions accidentally, which then force me to exit the freeway and have to swipe through the overwhelming amount of categories of sub options, none of which I seem to be able to get the hey bmw “assistant” to assist with! This is the main downside, and so far, the only one I can really find . THIS VEHICLE ROCKS MY WORLD, and I am incredibly happy with my choice, having found a 2020 with all the bells and whistles, low miles, coffee leather, & the M Sport package, and even a wireless phone charger (hard to come by!) Highly recommend the more rare 3rd row option that I found, in my X5! Touch of a button, essentially, and the whole back half of the vehicle transforms! All in all—it is a dream to drive. Be careful for the master key buttons—much too bulky and easy to press unlock/panic/lock if placed loosely in a purse that has anything at all inside of it to press! The X5 is a wonder. I’m still discovering the features and comparing to my 2013 5Xseries.
First the ride is like floating on a cloud. All of the notifiers can be overwhelming so read the manual. Some features can be modified (like how high the tailgate goes up) and the gesture control which can be increased/decreased. I especially like how high up I’m sitting. I’m 5’ and needed a seat cushion in my 5X series and still felt like I was too low-not this car!
I’m sure it will be awhile for me to customize this car to my driving experience. It’s bigger, safer(many cameras) and more comfortable than my previous 5X. Dec 31, 2020

The X-5 is an excellently crafted piece of machinery. Performance, comfort and safety abound in this mid-size sports activity vehicle.
The enhanced use of technology adds a measure of security and accident avoidance to this vehicle’s exceptional appeal. Build quality assures an extraordinary ownership experience. The only substantive shortcoming of the BMW X5 is non-availability, in the US, of a diesel engine. Dec 17, 2020

Paddle gear shifting
In new X5 models I am totally turned off by additional paddles behind the steering wheel. So are MBs and Audi cars. Luckily not in all Volvos. I just learned that BMW models sold in Europe come with two steering wheels: sporty version (with paddles) and standard without paddles. Why BMW dealers are telling me that paddle gear shifting is the only choice in the USA?
