After a significant overhaul for the 2016 model year, the 2017 Chevrolet Volt compact plug-in hybrid hatchback returns with a few additional upgrades. These include seating for 5, an extended all-electric cruising range, and a whole new look; the Volt is also expected to offer a new safety feature and a new exterior paint hue, and should gain eligibility for an upgraded Federal Tier 3 Emissions status. And best of all, in the minds of reviewers, it’s scheduled to go on sale nationwide in the spring of 2016, as opposed to a more traditional launch in selected states.
The 2017 Volt is slated to return in 2 trims, the base LT and the top-shelf Premier, both available only in the front-wheel-drive (FWD) configuration. According to most in the media, cabin room is again tight, especially in the rear seats, though cargo area behind the rear seats remains a comparatively spacious 10.6 cubic feet. The rear seats can also split-fold for a significant addition to cargo space, though Chevy hasn't said how much more.
The upcoming model year should see the addition of adaptive cruise control to one of the optional Driver Confidence packages, and the choice of a new Citron Green Metallic exterior color. This new paint color is more of a promotional ploy, however, and will be available only on a limited basis.
Powering the 2017 Volt is a 1.5-liter engine/generator, a pair of electric motors, and a single-speed direct-drive transmission. Look for 149 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque from this powerplant, "fueled" by a state-of-the-art 18.4 kWh (kilowatt per hour) lithium-ion battery. The Volt is primarily driven by the electric motors, while the gasoline engine and regenerative braking system provide on-the-road charging for the battery pack. Chevy claims a 53-mile all-electric cruising range, and at least one review of the 2016 version reported a max range of 62 miles on battery power alone, which is distinctly commuter-friendly. With a full electric charge and a full tank of gas, the Volt is estimated to have a range of 420 miles. When running on gasoline only, the 2017 Volt is expected to achieve an estimated 43 mpg city/42 highway/42 combined. Driving with both gas and electric power should return the equivalent of 102 mpg combined.
Other fuel-efficiency features for the 2017 Volt include 4 driver-selectable modes, Normal, Sport, Hold, and Mountain, and a steering-wheel-mounted paddle-shifter offering a Regen on Demand mode that adjusts the electrical charge directed to the battery by regenerative braking. For those using the plug-in feature, this compact hatchback’s battery can be fully recharged in about 13 hours using a household 120-volt outlet, and the available 240-volt dedicated outlet will fully charge the Volt in about 4.5 hours.
Standard features expected for the 2017 Volt include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, keyless entry and ignition, remote engine start, and full power accessories, with the LT offering cloth upholstery, the Premier leather upholstery and heated front and rear seats. Inside, you'll find cruise control, telescoping tilt-wheel steering, automatic climate control, and a rear-view camera, along with Bluetooth-integrated OnStar telematics with 4G LTE WiFi connectivity and GM’s MyLink apps, all interfaced via an 8-inch touchscreen display. Both trims are also slated to include a single CD/MP3 player, 6 speakers, satellite radio, and an auxiliary audio input.
The 2017 Volt Premier will also feature wireless cell-phone charging capability and a standard auto parking-assist feature for both parallel and perpendicular parking challenges.
Options available on the Premier include GPS Navigation and a pair of safety-enhancing Driver Confidence packages with blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assistance, automatic forward braking, and adaptive headlights.
Standard safety equipment aboard the 2017 Volt includes 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front and rear side-mounted airbags, front and rear head curtain airbags, daytime running lights, OnStar emergency communications and alerts, a post-collision safety system, and a remote antitheft alarm. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the current Volt its best score of Good in all areas except the small-overlap frontal-offset test, where this plug-in hybrid hatchback received a second-best score of Acceptable.
With Toyota’s recent deletion of its Prius Plug-In Hybrid, the Volt is challenged by the likes of Ford’s C-Max Energi and Fusion Energi (both of which are roomier than the Chevy), and BMW’s smaller i3.

The car was fully loaded, leather, heated seats, lane assist, self driving capable. The car is one of the best values on the road. The car occasionally has minor issues, but has never had major problems (I own a 2016, too). I’d compare it to a base level European luxury car. However, maintenance costs are way lower and it has the flexibility of electric around town, which reduces wear and tear.Jul 08, 2023

I own the vault for approximately eight months. I then gave it to my daughter as I wanted to buy a car. My daughter already had an early model vault and loved it and that is why I gave it to her not because of any dissatisfaction with the car. I think the car was good looking and had a very nice interior. The car was also very peppy and I consistently got 50 to 52 miles on the battery before the gas engine kicked in. When the gas engine kicked in it was almost in perceptible. Everything About the car was very well done. I would buy another one right now but I don’t need a second car.Sep 26, 2022

Hands down most advanced electric plug in model. The transition electric to gas is SEAMLESS. Even when battery reaches zero, the Volt still uses regen to power slow speeds while engine shuts off when stopped or coasting. Gas MPG is 42+. So its super economical even in gas mode. No range anxiety. Make sure to get a level 2 charger, which can work through a dryer outlet of 10-30 NEMA or higher.

This is a great car if you commute 50 miles or less round trip from one location to another. The engine comes on when the charge is depleted or if you need heat inside the cabin. The back seat is designed for those short in stature. I am 56 and I struggle to get in and out of the back seat. The rear seat headroom is very low and your head ends up close to the tailgate hatch glass with an obstructed view out the side windows. GM calls it a five-passenger car but the rear center seat is very uncomfortable with the cup holders sitting in between your legs, there is no way to remove it. Great car for a single person or couple, use the back seat as cargo area more than passenger seating.Jan 13, 2022

Looking for a new Volt to replace my 2013 Volt. Love the car. Don’t know why it isn’t more popular and was discontinued by GM. Very economical, low maintenance & good for environment. Having an EV with gas backup is the best option in my opinion at this point until batteries can go farther & charge faster & more charging stations become as abundant as gas stations. Jan 19, 2021

I think it is a great value and definitely underrated in the electric car market. Of course I wish this model had more stuff (crash avoidance, parking sensors, etc) but it does come with a lot. And, maybe it does have these things but I just havent figured them out yet. Overall, seems like a great car and after 150 miles, havent used any gas.Sep 18, 2020

The car gets 53 miles of electric motor use before needing to result to using its gasoline powered engine.
I do not drive 53 miles pr day so I mostly drive an electric car. the emissions for electric vehicle are so far below those
for a gasoline engine itnot worth comparing! for longer rides when I use the gas engine I am still acheiving over 40 mpg. very good for a car that is well equipped and comfortable to boot.
I bit the bullet and solar paneled my home so the charging of the car and its use is almost totally emission free.
Just to let you know I will not recover the cost of the panels in my life time. It was done totally for the Environment

well this is the 2nd volt we own, my wife got one first. I enjoyed the miles per tank of fuel, as far as 3700 mile on 1 tank (10 gallon). even when the range extender gas engine is being used it gets better economy (42) than my malibu did (28). I can continue to drive it just by stopping for fuel. I have photo cells on the roof so I can not tell you how much the electric bill went up, a little before the panels came on line this past christmas, the last 2 mo. were $0.Jul 10, 2020
