Those who have truly made it will relegate the black Chevy Tahoe to their minions and order up a 2015 Rolls-Royce Phantom. This 4- or 5-passenger full-size luxury sedan remains the flagship of the Rolls-Royce fleet and can often be seen conveying the rich, if not always famous, from one high-end function to another, all over the world. Furthermore, this handcrafted land yacht remains virtually without peer, though Bentley’s Mulsanne sedan arguably comes close in the minds of some reviewers.
The 2015 Phantom returns in both the standard-wheelbase edition and in an Extended Wheelbase (EWB) version with 10 additional inches of rear legroom. The Phantom sedan also shares the brand name with a pair of siblings in the Phantom Coupe and the Phantom Drophead Coupe convertible, both of which are covered in separate reviews.
For the 2015 model year, Rolls has given a few minor tweaks to the seemingly endless number of standard and optional adornments in the 4-door Phantom variant. Perhaps the most notable new add-on is an available Starlight Headliner. Complementing the standard ambient cabin lighting, this newly available overhead is custom configured, via hand-woven LED strands, to represent an owner’s preferred nighttime view of various celestial constellations.
The formidably constructed Phantom sedan is a large vehicle weighing in at close to 6,000 pounds, and that’s without the available armor plating. The standard-wheelbase version offers a 140.6-inch (11 feet, 8.6 inches) wheelbase and 230 inches (19 feet, 2 inches) of length overall (LOA). Current and former NBA stars, however, may want to select the EWB edition boasting a 150.4-inch (12 feet, 6.4 inches) wheelbase and a LOA of 239.8 inches (19 feet, 11.8 inches).
Powering all this plush is a 453-hp 6.7-liter V12 engine, managed by an 8-speed automatic transmission to put out 531 lb-ft of torque. Needless to say, mileage numbers aren’t pretty at 11 mpg city/19 highway/14 combined, but chances are if you own a Phantom, you also own the oilfield. Consider, as well, that a 0-60 time of under 6 seconds isn’t too shabby.
Furthermore, your chauffeur will be happy to note that the 2015 Phantom returns with an adaptable suspension system, self-leveling air springs, electric power steering, and electronic damping, all of which provide a comparatively competent driving experience while you relax in the 2- or available 3-passenger stadium-style rear seat, confident that your ride will remain not only stately, but absolutely regal.
Standard appearance features for the 2015 Phantom will again include 21-inch aluminum wheels that remain available in one of 5 separate designs, as well as a power sunroof, LED headlights, and power-functioning soft-close coach doors.
Inside, hand-stitched premium leather upholstery and plush materials return complemented by power-adjustable front seats and memory for driver's settings, as well as full power accessories, cruise control, power-adjustable telescoping tilt-wheel steering, a power-closing trunk lid, and, in the EWB trim, 4-zone automatic climate control.
Techno-goodies include multiple cameras for parking assistance, as well as Bluetooth-interfaced Rolls-Royce Assist telematics boasting standard GPS navigation, concierge service, and, of course, Bluetooth-based hands-free communications.
Entertainment again includes the standard 600-watt Lexicon 7 premium audio system, and sports a 6-DVD changer, a dashboard-mounted video display, 15 Surround Sound speakers, satellite radio, and auxiliary audio input.
Options for this status-laden sedan are seemingly limited only by the owner’s imagination. In addition to the debuting Starlight Headliner, such extras as exterior paint schemes, interior fabrics, and genuine wood accents all remain available to display personal preferences. Some of the more generic available features, moreover, include, besides the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament cast in either sterling silver or gold, a rear-seat wet bar, rear-seat DVD entertainment and video reception, a glovebox humidor, and leather headliner. Furthermore, the Dynamic package, offering a stiffer suspension, modified braking and transmission tuning, visible exhaust pipes, and a thicker steering wheel, might appeal to those aficionados who don’t mind driving their Phantom on the chauffeur’s day off.
Finally, standard safety equipment bolstering the 2015 Phantom’s hefty bulk includes 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front side-mounted airbags, front and rear head airbags, daytime running lights, front fog/driving lights, and Rolls-Royce Assist emergency alerts and communications. Additionally, adaptive and self-leveling LED headlights are standard, as is a post-collision safety system and a remote antitheft alarm. There is no safety testing data for this ultra-high-end sedan, and there are some reviewers who find it curious that this otherwise technically marvelous machine still doesn’t offer such updated safety techno-features as blind-spot warnings, adaptive cruise control, or lane-departure alerts.
