Ideal Family Car With Fantastic Fuel Economy —

I love the fuel efficiency in this car combined with the spacious interiors and cavernous cargo area. I swapped a small Mazda Protege hatchback for this and upgraded our fuel economy, space, style and utility all at once. I have had this car for about 4 months after buying it used with 50K miles. We are more than ecstatic about how it performs on the road and obtains amazing fuel economy, well beyond EPA rated. We get 37-40 MPG highway and 32-35 mpg local. It certainly performs worse on really short trips (less than 3 miles) because it takes a couple miles to get the hybrid system warmed up and actively boosting the efficiency. If you keep highway speeds to 65 mph or less you can match the efficiency we are getting. When I drive it full out at 80 mph highway the fuel economy drops to about 27-28 mpg, which is still better than just about every SUV on the road. The trunk is huge and easily accessible. We love the rear glass open feature which allows you to just pop open the rear glass and reach in without lifting open the whole large tailgate door. This allows us to open and get to things while in a small 1 car garage with the garage door shut. I have a nice trailer hitch mounted bike rack that works wonderfully and avoids the need for a rooftop system which reduces fuel efficiency and increases the chance of having clearance issues. The roof rack is a great feature that can be used for added carrying capacity in a pinch, which makes this car a great road tripper or family car for any family of 5 or less. I did a lot of research to pick a family car that could cover our needs for space and utility along with fuel economy and style, the Ford Escape Hybrid is the only one that has it all!

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: stylish vehicle with plenty of space and fantastic fuel economy.  Best fuel efficiency of any SUV ever made available! (as of 2014)

Cons: hybrid system can be finicky in high temperature swing seasons.  It would be nice to have more power and more control over how the car utilizes its hybrid capabilities.

Nice Mid-size Family Suv — Shows very little signs of wear and tear after 6 years of use. No mechanical issues or cosmetic issues to this point. Works well with two kid's but adding our dog makes things a little tight inside. A little extra cargo room in the back would be helpful.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Excellent gas mileage, Handles well in the rain & snow.

Cons: Maintenance seem to be a little higher than a non-hybrid car.

Best Suv Hybrid Thus Far... — If you're looking for a SUV that gets your excellent MPG then FEH is the vehicle for you! I get combined average of 37.5 MPG. I go to the gas station about 2.5x a month which is awesome for our current gas price situation.

Pros: Fuel efficient, low maintenance, spacious

Cons: None

I Love My Escape Hybrid! — Fast performance, awesome electric boost coupled with CVT makes the most of all the poweravailable in the drivetrain. Braking is a little sluggish, but not bad. Provided you know all the cornering tricks (i.e. accelerating around corners, etc) it handles great. Build very soldly, especially for the price. Some surfaces seem a little cheap inside, but for the price, fantastic considering the cost of all the hybrid drivetrain components. I haven't had any problems. Styling, great. Not your usual melted soap bar SUV. Interior styling is very inviting, especially considering the price. Fuel Economy? Don't believe 34mpg. I regularly get 36~37mpg and occasionally in late spring or early fall (70 ish degrees, moderate humidity) can get up to or a little above 40mpg. And, because it's a hybrid, you only have to chane the oil every EIGHT TO TEN THOUSAND MILES. Remember when replacing the tires to get EcoTrac tires, or you won't be happy with your fuel economy anymore. Don't know why, but it makes a HUGE difference.

Pros: Fuel Economy, Interior Space, Steering Wheel Feel, Tons of Standard Features

Cons: Soft Brake Feel

Very Efficient Cuz It's A Hybrid. Very Good Price For The High Quality. — It gets better gas mileage than toyota's highlander. It now has the Ford's SYNC technology and it is darn adorable.

Pros: very cute, good mpg.

Cons: A little small, cupholders right behind the gear shift so problem if cupholders are ful.  The gear shift handle not smooth.

Suv For The City Driver — Good gas mileage for city drivers. Styling is nice for it's time, however may deminish over time.

Pros: Great gas mileage for a SUV.

Cons: Slow on the freeway.  Pedestrians can't hear when you're coming.
