Expert review
The Ford Escape is America’s best-selling compact SUV, but it’s more than overdue for a refresh after six years in its current form.
The Ford Escape is a comfortable and usable compact crossover CUV that offers plenty of room for four to five passengers and all of their gear. It’s not a sports car, but with up to 200 horsepower from an available V6, the Escape feels lively and quick. Handling and ride quality are both better than expected for a sport-utility. Though it’s small in stature, the Escape can carry more than its fair share of cargo with the seats folded down.
The Escape is targeted at buyers that need a compact crossover that still has plenty of space and comfortable ride. It competes in a crowded segment that includes the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Jeep Liberty, Hyundai Tucson, and even the Subaru Forester. The Escape is built on the same platform and has many of the same features as the Mazda Tribute and the Mercury Mariner.
The Escape is available with a new 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 153 horsepower and 152 lb-ft of torque, an efficient 2.3-liter hybrid four-cylinder with 155 horsepower, or a 3.0-liter V6 that makes 200 horsepower and 193 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard for some models, but a four-speed automatic is standard for most.

What owners say
"Overall, owners of the 2006 Ford Escape tend to have a positive experience, particularly praising its cargo space, gas mileage, and performance for a compact SUV. Many drivers appreciate the roomy interior and the fun handling, especially for light off-roading. On the downside, some have noted issues with road noise, braking, and the quality of materials in the interior. While some feel it lacks power, others appreciate its fuel economy and practicality for everyday use."
Overall this was a good car. Good gas mileage. Excellent acceleration as well as quick pickup on the high end. The car held up well externally as well as internally. My biggest complaint about this car would be the road noise.
January 24, 2014This was a company car for my dad's work, now it is my mom's car. We got it to replace the Jeep with. It is very powerful and smooth, even more than I thought it would be. The color (orange) is really awesome because it is different. I drove it from Philadelphia to Columbus and it got 26 mpg- and it's a V6. Around town it gets around 20, because we drive it hard. So far it's been reliable- 68,000 miles in 2 years.
June 30, 2008I like the 2006 looks more than the newer models. My wife loves the visibility and nimbleness. Performance is adequate. Braking is good and we feel safe going down the road. We would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a compact SUV.

August 22, 2011Rides good for an SUV, pretty good on gas mileage. Not as comfortable as a luxury car but it will do. Only drawback is having to climb into the car rather than settling down into a nice seat. Back area is big enough to hold 4 sets of golf clubs without taking the big drivers out of the bags like I had to in my Taurus Wagon.
October 13, 2009It is one of the best cars I have ever owned!!! It is roomy and is great for moving stuff. Lots of room for passengers as well as stuff. The stock sound system is awesome and the overall performance is outstanding!! I just love it!! You will too...I know it!
July 28, 2008I have no complaints with this car other than the layout of the transmission cooler. The hatchback is handy. Its not a large SUV, I've owned an Expedition, this one is just as good in its own way, certainly as tight, just not quite as heavy on the road and missing the third row seats. May be a little light in the back end if you are driving in in climate weather. This transmission has been pushed to the limit and is still tight. I cant imagine many better values out there for your money, short or long term.
December 20, 2014Great car. In very good shape. low miles, like new tires. Good interior. 4 cylinder has plenty of pick up and gets great gas mileage. Very roomy interior for size of vehicle, backseats fold for transporting larger loads. I would recommend this car to a friend.
November 8, 2011I've had my Escape for a month now. It has all the cargo carrying capacity of a regular SUV with a fun ability for light off-roading, all with GREAT gas mileage while still maintaining a decently comfortable ride and impressive handling. I have the 2.3 liter 4-cylinder coupled with a five-speed manual. The manual is the only way to go in my opinion.
June 11, 2008Not an all-out 4X4 but had 4X4 capability so can't go everywhere, but has surprisingly good mud-slugging ability.
February 10, 2008I wanted something in the 30K range with 4 wheel drive that looked good and was reliable and this Escape has lived up to my expectations. Not exactly a Tahoe by any stretch...but this has been a very pleasant vehicle to drive.
