The 2006 Chevrolet Colorado is Chevy's midsize truck representative. Of course, "midsize" is used loosely here, as the crew cab measures over 17 feet long and 5 feet wide.
Two engines are available: the dohc 2.8-liter, 169-ci dohc I4 rated at 175 horsepower at 5600 rpms with torque at 185@2800. The available dohc I5 is a slight step up, at 3.5 liters and 211 cubic inches, giving 220 and 225 horsepower and torque at the same RPMS.
Mileage is good for a truck, with 27c/21h for the 5-speed manual dohc I4, ranging to the more gas guzzling 23h/18c dohc I5 automatic.

I bought this truck new in the summer of '06 with every option available (the 3LT) including trailering setup. It has been a really dependable truck. Once I put the bed cover on it my mileage on long trips was as high as 25 mpg. Once they switched to ethanol blends, my mileage is still about 22 on the interstate and 19 around town. The 3.5 has plenty of power even when towing my 19' center console boat. The ride is comfortable and the leather full power seats w/ heat can't be beat. The back seat is a different story. it can comfortably fit 2 garden gnomes, anything larger is scrunched up. I have 106K miles and maintenance has been minimum. I did a full brake job recently, changed the thermostat and hoses, and solenoid on the charcoal canister. Other than that, zero problems. And the brakes really didn't need it, just thought after 100k they should. I just wish they still made them this year.Apr 11, 2014

I love the handling and towing of this mid-sized truck but the shorter bed makes hauling longer items a bit harder than a full-size bed. The fuel economy is one of the best, especially for a truck and the comfort is spot on.Aug 01, 2013

Get one if you're planning on using the bed only on occasion. And when carrying load you're not in a rush, because power is seriously lacking. Its a truck, so handling was not great, but since this truck is so slow that shouldn't be much of an issue. Aug 19, 2012

Truck looks good and is very comfortable on those long days in the cab. The milage has been great and other than normal service very little has been required in 105,000 miles. Original tires went 60,000 miles, rear brakes at 104,000 miles who could ask for more. The Z71 Offroad suspension has provided a great ride with enough toughness to handle trailers. The 3.5 litre 5 cylinder engine has plenty of get up and go without emptying your wallet at the Pump. Highly recomend these trucks, Just replaced this one with a new V8 Colorado.Jun 27, 2011

The truck has been perfect and the gas mileage is much higher than the EPA rated it. The cab is super quiet. Truck tracks perfect with 80,000 miles on it and seems like it wants to coast forever.Engine and trans are super smooth. The truck has shown no signs of wear and other than one set of tires and front brakes only this mostly city driven Colorado comes very highly recommended. I love this truck!Jun 04, 2011

The suspension aspect of the truck is great for corners, but thats about it, handles the bumps horrible. It also has pretty good power for the gas mileage that it gets, which is about 20mpg. The build quality, is well Chevy like. No major problems at 57,000 milesMar 25, 2011

Wish the wheels could hold larger rims without changing the tires.
Better sound system is MUCH needed. The system isn't even close to what a factory set should be.

The Chevy Colorado is an excellent truck to own. It's moderately powerful, but it's very hard working. The build of the design is phenomenal, it's durable and can haul a lot of weight. It's about as fun as a truck can be to drive. The only thing I regret is being stubborn and getting the Regular cab, I like the look of the reg over the ext cab, but it's cramped sometimes. I also wish it was a stick, but good luck finding one of those. Aside from those two things it's great, and the 4wd performs great in the weather. It's an all around good truck, mileage is 18/22. ive found that the inline 5 cylinder puts out a lot of power. i pull an old 70's 13 foot lionel tent trailer with no problem. the gas milage could be better but i think it is a very good smaller pick up truck. i would recomend it above the other small trucks out there at this time.Sep 11, 2008

I bought it for fuel mileage, so I can't really beef about the performance too much, though it does have enough that it's still fun to drive, and gets close to 30 MPG. It also has relatively solid construction, and a lot of convenience features. For the mileage, it's hard to beat in a pickup.Aug 23, 2008

Performance is ok could be better if i put more money into it. it helps me work though. it has its fair amounts of dings on it. gas is better than you think it would be on my truck because its a inline 4. I love my truck. I got the 4 cyl. because I have a 50+ mile commute everyday. She gets better gas mileage than a lot of people I work with who drive lame sedans...usually about 24 mpg. I love her look, rough and tough and not too big. I love the chrome trim (as opposed to the painted bumper). I have the manual transmission and I'm very pleased with it. 2006 Chevy Colorado XTREME with the normal xtreme package( 18 inch rims, ground effects, lowered 2 inches, and emblems) has a I5 engine (5 cylinder) pushin 220hp, runs great and accels pretty damn quick, hits rev limiter at 100... i purchased the hard bed cover from A.R.E makes the truck look even better and i have a carpet throughout the bed of the truck.... i have 2 10 inch alpine typer r subwoofers, kenwood 1800 watt amp and a sony headunit which im waiting to install once i have more money to built a custom box and everything elseApr 04, 2008

In my quest to find a mid-sized 4-door truck as my daily driver I found myself seated in a Chevrolet Colorado. I thought that I would be impartial and try both foreign and domestic trucks alike.
The aluminum 5-cylinder engine (242-hp) boasts healthy mileage of 17-city and 23-highway. It felt surprisingly strong for an engine missing a cylinder. It pushed me off the line and through corners with ease. It was actually enjoyable to drive.
The exterior looks rather old, but still has enough sparkle to keep you interested. The interior followed the same pattern - nothing really special.
If I was a "Chevy Guy" I would be very happy to purchase this truck. But I'm not and probably will never be again after my vast experiences with domestic automobile issues.Jun 07, 2007

Starting problem signs
Occasionally whenever I go to start my truck, it always starts I've never had a problem with it not starting but the engine struggles and the engine's almost dragging like barely able to turn over and then it'll just once it does and I rub it a couple times it's good to go. I recently bought a 2006 Chevy Colorado. I've noticed the smell of gasoline, and my husband just found a puddle of gas under the truck where we park. We took it to the mechanic, but they couldn't find a leak. They said they checked all the hoses and pressurized the system but couldn't find any leaks. Is it ok to drive? Should I go to a different mechanic for a second opinion? Is it dangerous?
