Chrysler has expanded the PT Cruiser lineup once again for 2005. There are now eleven PT variations. The Dream Cruiser and Limited Platinum Edition have both been dropped from the lineup, but four convertibles and two Signatures models have been added.
The new two-door convertible is available with the Base, Touring, and GT trim levels, and all three PT engines are available with this body style.
Chrysler's 2005 Signature Series package was available on several different models, including the PT Cruiser, 300, Sebring, Pacifica and Town & Country. This package commemorates Chrysler's long history, and bundles several appearance and luxury features at no additional cost. Upgrades on the PT include a navigation system, chrome trim, a moon roof, Sirius satellite radio, and two-tone leather seats. This model is available with two engine options.
The Base wagon, Base convertible, Touring wagon, Touring convertible, Limited wagon, and Signature Series wagon are all powered by the original 2.4 liter DOHC inline four, which delivers 150 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. The Touring Turbo Covertible, Limited Turbo wagon, and Signature Series Turbo wagon house the mid-level engine option: a turbocharged version of the 2.4, which now makes 180 horspower and 210 pound-feet of torque. The GT and GT Convertible are the only two PT Cruisers to boast a 220 horsepower version of this engine, which sends them from 0 to 60 in just 6.7 seconds.

Since the PT Cruiser has not been made since 2010 it lacks a lot of the newer tech and safety features. On the other hand it is simpler, less potential faults, warnings and etc. It drives fairly big for a small car, the Turbo GT versions have a lot of pep, good passing power, acceleration and such. Base and Touring models are somewhat under-powered. I was able to get mine with a manual transmission and a convertible top it is great for weekend trips and cruises. I like it a lot. Buyers should note due to age you may find needing to spend money on upkeep or at inspection time. Timing belt replacement at 100,000 miles or slightly before especially on low mileage used cars is a necessity and expensive $1100.00 plus and control arms and bushings will need to be replaced if not already done at 50,000 miles or so. Fun to drive, I have found relatively reliable. Retro looks are not for anyone . Lights can be upgraded to LEDs relatively easily. Lots of Facebook groups to find information, suggestions and hand holding. Very happy with my purchase.May 20, 2024

Review for 2008 PT Cruiser. Dashboard Alert Problems and Engine cuts off. he problem is within ignition switch! I just figured it out by my ignition switch going out! Chrysler and many mechanics couldnt solve the problem for years and now I figured it out by dumb luck.May 15, 2022

I am 62 years old and owned at least 60 cars anf my 2005 is the most unrealible car I ever owned .the check engine light has turned on clear it to a dozen times in 4 months I have replaced 3 sensors 3 eng belts spark plugs alienator battery had a tire blow out and other things it is not very fuel efficient and poorly designed there is not room to work on engine it is cramped inside I hate this car I don:t compare to any car maybe a Ford pinto or Chevy Vega POSNov 19, 2021

Very ergonomically constructed interior - I am 6’4” and it was in no way cramped or uncomfortable. Got our first one in September 2000, had to wait six months for it. Still driving our second 2005 GT Turbo - the turbo makes the car lots of fun to drive.Jan 18, 2021

I cant speak about this 2005 PT Cruiser. However I can tell you about the 2010 PT that I bought new. It has had only one repair in my 10 years of use; A fan motor in the air conditioner system. I can only say good things about this vehicle. Other than wear items like tires and one battery, nothing else repaired except the fan motor. I like the PT so much that i am looking for a Convertible model to use on warm, sunny days which is nearly 24/7/365 here in Florida. Good luck to all.May 20, 2020

The performance was average and had problems with the transmission and shifter cable easily detaching, it drove well and the engine was solid. The seating space was reasonable, the rear hatch back was easy to use and the fold down seats a plus for cargo space.

With a 0-60 of 7 second and a power top that only takes 10 seconds to put down, this is a very fun and roomy compact convertible. i do wish Chrysler had splurged a little more for the center dash, but with heated leather seats, it is overall an enjoyable car. wish it got better fuel economy though, i only average about 20 mpgMar 25, 2014

Very versatile vehicle, the back seats remove completely for more cargo storage. You can even move a couple of big screen T.V.s in the back or pick up a few things at Home Depot. Very functional and usable space. The limited Edition Turbo Wagon has the leather and suade interior which is awesome especially with the heated seats in the winter time. The Turbo loves the cold weather and cool air into the Turbo. Gas mileage is amazing I get about 27-28 on the Hiway and about 25 in mixed driving. The trick is you have to use 91 Octane gas. I also really like the interior space and ease of use of everything. Great car for the money! On a nice day you can open the Sunroof and hear the Turbo!!! This is a great fun convertible, the turbo charging makes this car a fast nimble toy. Plenty of room for adults in the rear seat and a surprising amount of trunk space although I would suggest leaving the boot at home if you're filling the trunk with luggage.Mar 08, 2012

The 2005 PT Cruiser is a great car. Mine is the Touring Convertible Edition with the Turbo Engine. It cleans up beautifully and turns heads when the top is down. Accelerates fast, great on the highway, I couldn't be more happy with this car!Jan 18, 2012

It has room for 4 adults. It's pretty quick, but it tends to understeer. Average
Chrysler quality (lots of plastic, some creaks, goes through o2 sensors like I go
through watches. It is pretty cheap to maintain, but it is pretty piss poor on gas

Brakes well,
handles well,
acceleration little slow
bit of a rough ride.
Hauls BIG things,
mileage is about 25 city, 29 hwy.

The Cruiser is a good basic car which I routinely get serviced, and has not needed repair in the 5 years I've owned it. My next car will need better gas mileage and acceleration on hills, and less road noise. I picked it for price, styling, and the roomy comfortable interior. Quick car, but it weighs a ton and gets terrible gas mileage. Best buy for a convertible. Doesn't handle well, too short and heavy. Since it's a convertible it is a rattle trap. I have replaced all the suspension components and it's still rattly.Jan 23, 2010

I bought my 2005 PT Cruiser Signature Series when I worked at a Chrysler dealer in Florida. They are a great car to drive and very reliable. I was totally sold at a Chrysler ride and drive event held for Chrysler sales people when we were passengers in base PT Cruisers driver by professional Indy Car Driver doing figure 8's around light posts in Universal's parking lot. The car handled extremly well when pushed to the limit.
I have the 150hp 2.4 L engine with a 4 speed automatic and it quite peppy off the line. I now own the vehicle over 5 years now and it is still as solid build wise as when i bought it.
The interior is so spacious I even fit a commerical gas BBQ in it. You can put a lot of stuff in this litlle car.
The Signature Series is a limited run of vehicles usually built the first 3 weeks of November and are specially equipped with some cool options at no charge. In 2005 options for the Signature Series PT included Nav, Leather, Sunroof, Chrome clad wheels, Chrome package and Sirius Radio.
I do have 1 small negative the gas mileage for a 4 cylinder vehicle is less than impressive. aintenance has average. I had 2 oxygen sensors blow out and the fan motor needed to be replacesd it was not cooling the car properly.
As for the Fun factor the PT is 100% fun. When I worked at Chrysler I loved the PT GT Turbo, talk about a torquey little car, just pop the clutch on that sucker and it would push you back in the seat. Jan 10, 2010

Overall, a decent car. I haven't had any major repair issues (knock on wood), and it's fun to drive. The interior is hard and plasticky, but at least it's interesting. I'd suggest opting for the five-speed manual or springing for the turbo motor. It's a very comfortable ride, and I'm pretty happy with it.Sep 04, 2008

We wanted manual shift when we bought this car which meant we had to order the GT package, the most expensive package they had for the PT Cruiser. My ex-husband liked pickup trucks but needed a daily commuter and we wanted to save gas, the interior has high seats which gave him the feel he liked, and it came with the manual shifting he liked and enough space to pack all his books (even a shelf for them in the back) he takes to refer to at work. We still had plenty of space to take friends and clients to dinner. It was easy for them to get in and out of even people who normally have trouble with most cars that have low seats. A lot of people liked the retro styling, people either loved or hated the looks of it. Once they rode in it they usually liked the ride. The turbo gave it plenty of power and it wore the first set of tires out very quickly. It's easier to go faster than you think you're going in this car.Feb 22, 2008
