With regard ro the XK8, the 2003-2006 models have the reliable 4.2 liter engine, Naturally aspirated and super charged. The earlier 4.0 liter engine is known to have timing chain tensioner issues (plastic) and requires an upgrade or you risk the chain snapping and fatal damage to the engine. The 4.2 NA has 300hp but feels more quick than fast. The xKR adds a supercharger for over 400hp. The interior quality is typical historical Jaguar with walnut veneer, wooden steering wheel, leather and nice carpet (not Wilton). Reliability is pretty good for the 4.2 litre cars, but it’s not a Toyota in terms of being trouble free. Rust is a big issue and mine merely had nuisance items go bad prematurely like a wheel bearing. But it has mostly been very reliable. In 2007 the X150 Alumimum cars came out looking quite a bit more modern. Quicker than the earlier steel cars, the x150s nevertheless lack the quality of materials of the xk8. In 2009 the 4.2 litre engine was superseded by a 5.0 litre motor which is quite a bit more powerful with 385 hp NA and eventually over 500 SC horses. Sadly the 5.0 litre cars renewed the Jaguar AJ8 engine’s timing chain tensioners. This was allegedly ironed out by 2013. In my opinion, as an owner and having driven all versions, the 4.2 engine cars are most desirable and have modest running costs. Any pre-2013 5.0 litre or 4.0 litre car should have timing chain tensioner upgrades verified or use it to get a discount. The xk8 has more quality to the interior and comfort. It also looks more like the E-Type if that is important to you. The X150 in my opinion is a bit better looking, quicker and feels more eager with less weight. Both in 4.2 are good cars. It’s your call.

This car is outstanding, the xkr is powerful, beautiful , so is the xk8 the coupe is gorgeous and the convertible too. Although the hydraulic system for the roof had major flaws. I would stick to the 4.2L , but this is true for any Jag (vs the 4.0L) The handling can be a surprise though. Its the sport car as it should be. So expect the suspension to feel uneasy and uncomfortable. The hard mode will let you feel everything on the road down to the pebbles. The supercharger lacks the throw your back to the seat effect but makes it up once youre launched. It will respond to your acceleration requests even on a hill at 30mph and above like crazy. Its is definitely fast and powerful. The parts are still available, although sometimes you have to dig deeper. Most of it at least. Some parts are common with other models so it helps. Strongly advise to learn do it yourself as you will be billed unfairly most of the time. Besides even a JAGUAR shop didnt have skilled people to know the ins and outs of this car so..If you want to avoid surprises do it yourself when you can. Get an extended warranty if you can too. One thing I never realized is how much xk8/xkr owners are crazy nuts and proud about their cars. And so am I! Theres no way around it, over you go Jag you never go back. The Jag in general have a bad reputation because of the older models that used to break all the time. And the huge amount of delicate electronic didnt help. But its a reliable car as long as its maintained on a regular basis. Like all sports car, church things before they get too old to be reliable. Theres a lot of documents and resources out there. The forums community is a HUGE help. Theres a strong solidarity feeling among owners. And you will get help if you ask. I think the biggest challenges though is to find someone at the shop that you can trust to work on it...I prefer day she/her. So get your hands dirty, go slow and learn as much as you can on your car to DIY It will open a whole new world too. After one year Im still in awe every time I look at her. Im obsessed I gotta say. And I think we owners all are! Have fun and good luck. Find yourself a nice cat but dont buy one i you dont have a few spare bucks. These cost money, Id say 3 or 4 times a basic car. Eg. Brakes pad and rotor on one wheel in parts alone average price oem Enjoy, hope it helped.

I Love The Xk8! — gorgoeus body, smooth curves and large round fenders, not many automobiles can compare with the look of this car. Lots of wood inside and beautifully stitched leather. I like the sport button option; when I get on the freeway - I just press the button and it takes off like a rocket ship!

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Speed, power, beauty

Cons: speeding tickets

Xk8 Review — Love the shape, prefer the Coupe though. This is my 8th or 9th XK. Preference is the XKR but could not find many in the US that were the 'old' shape Drives great Never lacks power Would buy this model again and again but at some point am going to have to go to the new shape.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Great looking shape.  Looks as if its going fast even when standing still

Cons: Rear seats
