2002 Volvo S40 1.9TReview

Great Daily Driver — This is my daily driver. We have owned this car since July 2002. It was purchased brand new fully loaded with the winter package. The car has a timeless look and has aged well. It still looks nice (I dare say BETTER) when parked among newer cars. Primary Use: Commuting to work Pros: Small luxury, turbo, responsive Cons: Price of parts doesn't go down, suspension coils have snapped, lack of accessories |

Great Small Luxury Car — Great small car. In my opinion it was the smallest and best luxury 4cyl car sold in the US in 2002. In the 12 years of ownership it has been very reliable and has never let me down or on the side of the road. Primary Use: Commuting to work Pros: Great MPG, small, quick, responsive. Cons: Price of parts never seem to go down and aftermarket parts/accessories are limited. |

Great Commuter If You Prefer European Style But Are On A Bit Of A Budget. Safe, Efficient, Reliable. — The S40 is a great compact executive sedan to buy used. New, they were overpriced compared to the competition, but they are a reliable second-hand buy. The interior in mine is well-appointed with leather, heated seats, automatic climate control, and a power sliding/tilt sunroof. For an entry-level vehicle, the power is decent from the 2.0 (badged as 1.9) turbo engine. I don't prefer the automatic transmission (the only option in the US market), but it shifts smoothly enough. DSC (dynamic stability control) and a winter shift mode are featured. Stock audio is all right, with an AM/FM stereo w/ cassette and CD player. Could use an upgrade. Fuel economy is excellent. I average 26.6 mpg in stop-and-go city traffic which includes crossing a large hill. I think the car's looks are great; the taillights seem a bit high but overall the styling is sharp and conservative. Primary Use: Commuting to work Pros: Great features, nice looks, Volvo safety reputation, adequate power, excellent fuel economy, comfortable Cons: Cramped backseat, small trunk, automatic transmission is the only option, parts are spendy (but car is reliable), some interior materials are a bit cheap, handling is not great, stereo is mediocre |

Overpriced Ford Quality — I purchased the car used, but after a year with the car, I've had to do a lot of work on it to keep it going. There is a lot of preventative maintenance needed as well with parts under the hood that needed lots of attention. Primary Use: Commuting to work Pros: For being a turbo charged car (albeit only 3.5 pounds of boost) it does great on fuel economy. Cons: The cheap plastics in the car will fall apart on you before you're done with the car. |

Great For A Couple, Even With One Or Two Little Kids. Not A Full Family Sedan, However. — Pros: Surprisingly peppy for a tiny engine, good fuel economy, very strong braking, good cornering. Fun to drive, comfortable even for relatively long journeys, several clever touches, excellent use of space. Larger than expected carrying volume (interior and trunk). Infrequently needs maintenance or service. Cons: Turning radius is a little large for a car its size. Power is as expected and wimpy above 45 mph or so. Several of the controls are not laid out properly, and maintenance costs are high when service is required. Primary Use: Commuting to work Pros: Safety, Reliability, Comfort, Features, Fun Cons: Service cost, lack of power, overall size |

Great Commuter Car. Better Than 30 Mpg On The Hwy And Fun To Drive. — I bought this car used as a commuter car when gas got above $3.00/gal about a year ago. Driving 90 miles a day, I find this car comfortable and fun to drive. The turbo gives enough power to get into traffic when you need it. The only complaints I have is the radio is a bit weak and headroom for people above 6 feet tall. Owner for 1 years, 6 months Miles Driven per Year:18,000 Pros: fuel economy, comfortable, fun to drive, back seats fold for more storage Cons: not many garages in my area will service this car |

Pros: Comfy, safe, solid car to keep the family safe Cons: A bit heavy so slow off the line |

Two Years Now And I Dont Want To Let It Go — this has been my daily driver for just under two years and i have only one problem they dont sell 5spd trans in the states. Other then that this has been a great car. With a avarage 42 miles to the gallon on the hwy way and spending less then 1000.00 a year on manting it hard to bet. Primary Use: Commuting to work Pros: good fun safe car Cons: need the manuel |

"Maintenance is very expensive on the Mercedes, and you are constantly chasing electrical problems. The Volvo seems to be a better driving experience, more taught steering and braking. Power is about the same, but the Volvo just seems more enjoyable." |
