2002 Lexus GS Preview summaryImage

After some significant restyling and the addition of a larger engine in the prior year, the Lexus GS 430 was unchanged for 2002. The sports sedan was evolved up from a capable performer with a modest V-6 to an intimidating powerhouse poised to compete with the BMW 540i. The GS was created in the mid-ninties to fill the sports sedan niche, and it was sandwiched price-wise between the entry-level ES and the flagship LS sedans. The GS 430 housed a powerful 4.3 liter V-8 engine, which generated 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. Despite its considerable bulk, at over 3700 pounds, the GS was incredibly quick. Its 0 to 60 mph time was around six seconds, with some variance in both directions depending on specific road tests. The GS was available in just one trim: 5-speed automatic, rear wheel drive. Bulk and power combined to pull down on fuel efficiency, rated at 18/23 mpg, but Variable Valve Timing technology provided some relief, as it not only improved efficiency but also lowered emissions.
Drivers descriptions and complaints illustrated the trade off between sport and luxury. While the GS was very fast, many drivers continued to request a manual transmission and stiffer suspension. The GS 430 did not have the refinements of the LS sedan, which allowed for a more aggressive and nimble demeanor. For most, who may have a hard time distinguishing between a luxury and a sport sedan, the GS 430 was a fine combination of both.
