What owners say
"Most owners of the 2002 Jeep Liberty appreciate its power and off-road capabilities, along with comfortable leather seats and a robust build. They enjoy driving it, especially in rough conditions. However, many drivers express dissatisfaction with the fuel economy, often noting that it doesn't perform well in that area. A few also mention issues like window malfunctions and suspension comfort."
Everything about this SUV is great. It is very maneuverable and short enough to park in tight spaces. Never had a problem with it that I didn't cause. I have it lifted 2.5" and I would definitely recommend lifting it, it looks way better and handles better. The only thing they could have done different is that they could have put a 4.0 or a V8 in it because the 3.7 is a little small for the Liberty's weight. I would say if they had matched the engine with the weight the Lib would get far better mileage. This is a great SUV that can handle just about anything you through at it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone used, but you have to get a mechanic to look at it beforehand.
December 1, 2011I really love the power i feel out of this little SUV. I can give it gas and it picks right up. I am also very happy with the 4WD capabilities. Overall, cost of ownership is low because maintenance is low. Gearboxes only need changed every 15k-30k, radiator every 100k, and tranny every 50k-60k. Gas mileage is about the same as my Ranger. about 20mpg. The handling can get a little rough around corners, keep the tires at 33psi and that should help.
June 29, 2010The Liberty Renegade is the first 4WD vehicle that I've owned, and it is definitely a nice feature to have when in questionable traction situations. I've yet to go off-roading with it, but would love to at some point.

January 9, 2008Cute compact SUV at a reasonable price. This vehicle is great for everyday commute and has a 4 wheel drive capacity. However, probably not the best vehicle for a bigger family, due to the lack of leg room in the back.
November 13, 2014My car softly growls with power. Great get up and go. Get to and over the speed limit before you know it. 18/20 MPG and with Diesel fuel. Diesel is cheaper nowadays than Gas. Nice. Fun to drive over ruff roads. High clearance.
October 19, 2009would like a solid front axle for a better lift. the part time 4wd isn't the best for in town in the winter,if you drive it too much in 4wd without enough slip on the road, it'll destroy your transfercase. four wheel low will get you through most the stuff. maybe a more powerful engine. or a lower gear range. but other than that its a blast to drive and work on.
July 20, 2009I've taken my Libby off road more times than I can count and it has never disappointed - even when I managed to get it stuck! (And that took some doing!) It's an incredibly solid vehicle. Thankfully I got mine early - before they lowered them in production.
February 1, 2008The Jeep Liberty is a great suv. It's built well, comfortable, and capable offroad. While it won't go where a Wrangler Rubicon will, it can still get out to the middle of nowhere with the comfort of leather seats, A/C, and a stereo. The 3.7 also appears to be a good motor with enough power. The two major drawbacks are the gas mileage (17.5 mpg) and the slightly girly lookin styling.
January 28, 2008it is an excellent SUV, but if you are looking for one, make sure it has rear disc brakes and ABS, also buying one without four wheel drive is the stupidest mistake ever, if you are not looking for a four wheel drive SUV, look elsewhere, the liberty was designed primarily for off-roading.
August 7, 2012My Jeep has better acceleration that my husbands Dodge Caravan. It handles well. It hasn't needed repairs and I hve it serviced about every 4-6 months, 3 months are not needed for my jeep. My Jeep is RED and I have had it for almost 10 years and I can't imagine trading it in. I love my Jeep! I would like better gas milage, it gets 10-20 mpg. It is a fun vehicle!
