No significant changes marked the launch of the 2002 Ford Expedition, but that was just fine with buyers, who grabbed up these full-size SUVs as soon as Ford could turn them out. The key selling points for the Expedition were size, comfort, and safety, and Ford continued to deliver all three.
Trim lines available for the 2002 Expedition were XLT and Eddie Bauer. The higher-end Eddie Bauer trim came standard with luxury features like leather upholstery and captain's chair seating. Still, even the most "basic" XLT model shipped off the line with plenty of frills, including 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, power windows, locks, and mirrors, a tilt steering column, power driver's seat, keyless-remote entry, power adjustable pedal set, intermittent front/rear wipers, and cruise control.
One of the optional features Ford offered for the Expedition was its proprietary Rear Sensing System, which used a radar setup to alert drivers when they were in danger of backing up into something (not an unusual occurrence when you're trying to maneuver a 17-foot sport-utility vehicle). Another very popular option was the rear entertainment system, which let harried parents relax while their kids enjoyed a video.
In addition to all the bells and whistles, the '02 Ford Expedition offered solid power under the hood. Buyers could stick with the standard 4.6 liter overhead cam V8 with 240 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft. of torque, or upgrade to a 5.4 liter version with 260 horsepower and an impressive 350 lb.-ft. of torque. A "Trailer Towing Group" options package, which included rear-leveling load suspension, was a good investment for drivers who wanted to haul a hitch.
So what's the down side? Fuel economy, of course. The 2002 Ford Expedition got just 14 mpg city, 17 mpg highway. Ouch!
What owners say
"Overall, owners love the 2002 Ford Expedition for its spaciousness, power, and comfort, especially for family trips and hauling gear. Many appreciate its reliability and the enjoyable driving experience. However, a common dislike is the fuel consumption, with some noting the V8 engine's tendency to use more gas than preferred."
I don't think there is a better vehicle than the Ford Expedition. Going on a trip? Pack whatever you want! Take that extra suitcase, and bring that extra friend! Moving? We put all of our clothes for 2 adults and a teenager and 4 large TV's, 3 large plants, and a bunch of paintings in this vehicle when we moved. Do you get carsick? You won't in an Expedition, because of the visibility and the height you are sitting up off of the road. If you aren't a big fan of traveling and road trips make you crabby, try your next trip in an Expedition. You'll quickly become a fan. You just can't beat this vehicle.
April 29, 2015Overall, my truck is a great family vehicle. It can seat 7 adults but I would suggest the 3rd row stadium seating be reserved for children as it's not roomy in the leg department. The 2nd row captain seats are very comfortable indeed. The DVD player keeps the kids happy for awhile. :-) The driver and passenger seating are very comfortable as well. As big as my truck is, it's not awkward and I've always felt comfortable driving it. My truck is a V8 Triton so it accelerates well and handles well. Braking depends on the brake & tire quality. The better the quality, the better the braking and handling. Cheap brakes squeak and cheap tires make the truck feel as though it's rolling slightly to the sides. I believe maintenance and repair costs are fair for my truck. Overall, I would recommend this truck for any family needing reliable transportation but can't afford $10,000+ for a new car.
February 3, 2012This is such a wonderful SUV. Gas is not as bad as most people may think. It gets 14 in the city and about 20 on the hwy. Very spacious for trips, and very safe. Driving is fun, wonderful, and very realiable. A really smart buy. I am really glad we bought it.

September 4, 2008I really like the power and the way the vehicle handles especially offroad. The only thing I dont like about it is the fuel mileage and the ato 4wd. Overall the vehicle is an excellent choice wether for business or pleasure.
October 11, 2011I love it's size, power, handling, and comfort. It is great for long road trips, and "grocery getting".My Eddie Bauer edition had all the bells, and whistles. Leather, heated seats and mirrors, power moonroof, 6 disc cd player, built in dvd player, 3rd row seats, just to name a few. It has performed well in all weather and road conditions, needed no major repairs, and is a blast to drive. The gas mileage was the only down fall to this vehicle. I love my Expedition, and will definitley get another!
January 12, 2009I loved the truck and gave it up only for gas prices. I have nothing I can complain about otherwise. The truck was beautiful and had every option I wanted in an SUV. It never failed me and was big enough to haul my friends and family up camping and had room for gear and food.
November 4, 2014I like how all my family fit perfect. The truck is very roomy and we are able to pull our boat,Or anything. My only dislike is that it's an 8 cylinder, uses a little more gas. But still a great truck.
October 12, 2013I love that we've driven it across country and back, all over the southeastern coast and all over town and she still gets up and go's!!!! I hope she goes for 10 more years. I love this truck!!!!! She has taken us from Washington DC to Santa Barbara California and back again.
