The Toyota Tacoma got a makeover for 2001, including a new front fascia, taillights, and headlights. Toyota also added two new Tacomas to the lineup, the S Runner and the Double Cab. The interior was also improved, with a smattering of cosmetic changes and improvements to the seats, including improved lumbar support in the optional bucket seats and a 60/40 split rear seat in the extended cabs.
The 2001 Toyota Tacoma came in a wide variety of trims, which included the Regular Cab 4WD, Xtracab 4WD, Xtracab V6 4WD, Double Cab V6 4WD, Regular Cab 2WD, PreRunner Regular Cab 2WD, Xtracab 2WD, PreRunner Xtracab 2WD, S-Runner Xtracab V6 2WD, PreRunner, Double Cab 2WD, PreRunner Xtracab V6 2WD, and the PreRunner Double Cab V6 2WD .The new Double Cab models offered four doors instead of two, and extra room in the extended cab. The S Runner was the sporty model, offering sport-tuned suspension.
Drivers like the 2001 Toyota Tacoma because it is small and basic, but still suits their needs when something needs to be hauled or towed. Owners of the truck also say it performs well off-road and like that there are a lot of options to chose from. Some drivers say that the bed is too small and the storage compartments are inconveniently located.

This was a 2001 Tacoma with 300K miles. Interior was still in decent shape. Paint on body was in fair shape. New set of tires. Engine felt a little sluggish and there were noises coming from hood like maybe pinging. Ride was ok. The dealer asking $5000, it maybe is worth $3500. Feb 15, 2020

The looks are great nice lines it looks like a 4 wheel drive but its not.I bought the truck with 15000 miles on it and i now have 157000,in this time other then regular mant. I only spent about 3.000 in repairs.Nov 18, 2013

I love the look, how it rides and drives, its dependability and mpg.
I do not care for the small, uncomfortable flip seats in the back and lack of leg room.
I would recommend the 4 door with bench seat in back if using for a family vehicle.Sep 16, 2013

There isn't anything I didn't like about this truck except that it was bought before it was known that our family would grow. Now that it has we have to get something bigger. If it weren't for that, we'd be keeping it until it disintegrating.Mar 14, 2013

Very reliable, plenty of pep if you need it. Good visability. With on 60k miles driven so far this truck will last me a very long time or be passed on to a grandson. Much easier to maneuver and park in tight places than full size. Jan 21, 2013

had to change out clutch at 100k has 161k on it now
still going strong oh I replaced the shocks once. Ive had it stuck in the river, water past the seats like i was sitting in the water. everything still works just had 2 drain the fluids.Dec 24, 2012

There are very few things I dislike about this truck. The overall look and appearance is great and the vehicle being 11 years old is in good condition. The only replacement that has been done as far as out of pocket expense was the window wiper motor.Nov 15, 2012

My vehicle has always started right up and been reliable in bad weather and would provide the same for anyone looking for a good solid 4WD vehicle. The vehicle has decent tires at this point but looking to replace very soon if not sold.Oct 25, 2012

Performance - Its a truck, 60mph is hit just a bit after changing out of second
gear, lots of torque
Build Quality - Only problem so far (after 100k miles) door actuator broke.
Appearance - well taken care of, looks good
Cost of ownership - 4x4 is thirsty, avg 18 mpg city

3.4L V-6 with 5 speed manual. its a 4x4. the truck has awesome power and can get itself outta any situation i put it in. its lifted 2.5 inches up front and 2 in the back. DIR coil over kit with upper control arms and deaver springs with bilistin shocks out back. it has a 32 inch mud terrain on it and also has magnaflow exhaust. all in all i love this truck and its by far one of the best trucks i have driven so far.May 22, 2009

I love my supercharged V6! I had a 460 Ford Crew Cab and my little Tacoma has more HP and gets double the gas mileage! As of last month it now has over 180,000 miles on the engine. Just like a timex, it keeps on ticking.Jan 08, 2009

I love that it's a pickup and it's got 4 doors. It had a decent sound system stock, and I've upgraded i somet. I would like a little more power and/or another gear or two, it's only a 4-speed. I would love for it to be a manual transmission. It's pretty sprightly, but the top end is a little lacking.
Build quality is great. It's a Toyota, so that's all that needs to be said about that.
It looks pretty good, I could stand some bigger tires, but stock work just fine. I've added chrome nerf bars, and will eventually get a grille guard and a Ranch Hand rear bumper. It gets pretty decent gas mileage, I usually end up with about 16 mpg, but I don't drive very conservatively. Hwy mileage is super if you don't exceed 60-65. It goes downhill fairly quickly over 70. The fuel tank is not huge, so highway range is 320-350 miles at around 70 mph. Slower=farther
Maintenance cost is average, tire rotation, oil change and all that cost the average for the region.
As far as the fun factor goes, it's not too bad. It'll accelerate quick enough if you hit the throttle right, and the steering is light, but a little vague. It will handle quick maneuvers well, as long as they're not extreme.
I would definitely recommend this vehicle for anyone that is looking for a very practical, fun to drive (for a pickup) truck.Dec 19, 2008

So I had the year model before with (2000) and the year after (2005). This is the one I like best. It'd be nice if it had the access doors like the 2005 model, but I don't get back there all that often, so it's not that big a deal. I might add a truck box or something - tonneau cover or perhaps a camper top. It might make it a bit more useful for camping and things like that - keeping things dry. I think it'd look pretty bad ass with some anthracite FJ Cruiser wheels, too...Sep 02, 2008

A little rough, due to an extra Leaf Spring with the TRD package, but a new suspension will end that problem. I also wish that there was a little bit more room in the Extra Cab model. Besides that I love it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a solid truck that has a good MPG rating.Aug 12, 2008
