The 2001 Toyota 4Runner marked the end of the almost-universally panned I4; all 4Runners now came standard with a 3.4-liter V6 rated at 183 horsepower and delivering 217 lb/ft of torque. Let us rejoice! Toyota tempered the power with some additional control features, including TRAC (traction) control, and a vehicle skid control system.
Fuel economy reflects the new power, with 16/19 city/highway estimates. The cabin is spacious and comfortable, particularly with the leather trim. The high ground clearance allows those who still buy SUV's to take off-roading to hit the trails.
Reviewers love the new engine and continued comfort of the interior. Complaints about fuel economy continue, but these are typical numbers for a mid-size SUV.

Type 3 4RUNNER might be the best Toyota ever made. Either 4 or 3.4 V6 especially 4x4 and even better if you can find a manual 5 speed 4x4.

Traction control light came on along with Engine Light, but on gas it does pretty good,, drove 1300 miles only filled up 3 times! Havent had to Put a lot of money into it except Breaks, oil Change...the "normal" things.Apr 20, 2014

for a vehicle that is over 10 years old, i see many on the road and it still looks like a recent model - its a great vehicle. its the most reliable vehicle ive ever owned. This is a vehicle that will not nickle and dime you to death. change the timing belt, change the oil, and it will last forever. The gas millage is not particularly great but it will get about 18mpg in town or on the highway.Jan 31, 2012

Good off road truck. The 4runner needs more power. I love the looks of the truck, I wish it had a little more leg room. It can be cramped with four adults. Great truck for the kids! Safe and reliable!Nov 10, 2011

acce;eration is decient for how small the engine is compared to the mass of the car. It is very underpowered as an automatic because of the gear ratio with the 4 speed with overdrive trasmition. it is very well built and drives/rides like a truck. i would deffinatly recomend this car to anyone who needs a safe reliable car. But if your going to get a 4runner get the 4WD model i have driven a lot of diffrent 4WD and AWD vehicles but the 4runner is overall the best.Jul 01, 2011

New battery, newer tires, 4 wheel drive, tow pkg. on back, lg. rubber mat in back, clean interior-cloth, garaged. Owned 1 year, drove in winter. Fun to drive, goes anywhere. Looks silver but color is Gold with Grey interior.

New Battery, newer tires. Clean inside, large rubber mat in back for hauling. Has second shifter for mud, off road. Just upgraded it to the tune of $800. Still needs a shift celonoid I am told by garage. Has running boards. I have a bad back, cannot get into it anymore. It has a handle for pulling yourself into the car.May 13, 2011

Running Boards, handle to help get into car, towing pkg., lg. rubber mat in back, clean, x-tra shift for off-road, snow, etc. Goes good, good tires, new battery,power windows ncluding back one. AM/FM radio. I repaired when I got it. Good second car for winter or ????May 06, 2011

Very strong all terrain, specially for bad roads; engine is the best, sounds as music and his 220 HP realy work. Is the best all road Toyota product, even than all new 4Runner models; fuel comsuption is not to high.Oct 19, 2009

I love the heated leather seats, the 4WD and the paint color (light gold). The running boards are extra slippery, and the windshield washer does not spray a nice, wide fan of bug juice like a GM. It's a trooper though!Feb 09, 2009

My 2001 4Runner is comfortable and I like all the bells and whistles. The seat is too short though, doesn't support my legs well. It feels much bigger to drive than my Cherokee did. I will know in July whether it handles OK on the trails. With the Cherokee I knew where my wheels were on the trail. I'll be in a better position to comment in about a month. this vehicle is the 4th 4-runner we have owned. i cannot say enough good about it. we
drive city, highway, mountains and desert. it has gone on some extraordinary adventures
- including extreme driving up a class V (river rating applied to road) four wheel mining
road (backing up switchbacks and all) with our children safely in the back seat, truck fully
loaded.
my husband was driving home during a dangerous ice storm - driving from city to
country. the roads in our state are crowned, thus have a high center gradually sloping
down (for drainage - though not a large change in height,, but enough). he felt the truck
sliding sideways while he was driving straight. suddenly, he heard the sounds of the
traction control system kicking in and the vehicle got itself back up to where it needed to
be in stead of the deep ditch. this truck has even made it through my daughter's learning
to drive. it is good to know our family is traveling in this safe and wonderful truck! Oct 04, 2006

Why are my TRAC OFF, VSC TRAC and check engine lights still on?
I have 2001 4Runner. the TRAC OFF & VSC TRAC lights have been on for a year. dealer has turned them off about 4 times and they still come on. I have replaced gas cap, no luck. Last week i replaced the Evap Cannistor, lights were off about 4 days and now are back on again. What could it be?
