With its redesign in 2000, the Dodge Neon seemed to be marketing itself more as a comfortable family car rather than an affordable sporty car that was fun to open up on the highway. The 2001 Neon learned the error of its ways and brought back the R/T and ACR Competition sedans to the lineup. The Highline base sedan was renamed the SE.
While the ES and SE Neons came with the single-cam 2.0-liter, 132-hp engine, the R/T featured a performance tuned version of this engine, coming in at 150-hp and paired only with the 5-speed manual transmission. A sports suspension, 16-inch wheels, airplane-like rear spoiler, ABS, traction control, and dual chrome exhausts completed the race car package. Drivers loved the way the R/T accelerated and the gas pedal's quick response. Steering around curves or other cars was a breeze. The R/T also offered a lot of luxury power options. In contrast, the ACR (American Club Racer) Neon was purely race-oriented. It had the same engine and suspension, but fewer luxuries. A Sports package which offered R/T features, minus the fog lights, moldings, and dual exhaust, was available on base model sedans in 2001 only.
Of course, 2001 Dodge Neon R/T owners loved the look, sound, and speed of this car, though in reality it wasn't that much faster than the regular 2.0 engine or the R/T Neons of old. Other Neon owners loved the room, seat comfort, responsive handling, and great fuel economy that had always been hallmarks of the Dodge Neon. Problems with rear blind spots are still mentioned, as are a miserable repair record, and a trunk lid that drops down too easily.

Cheap operation costs,easy to get parts,simplicity in design and construction. Controls are in easy reach and placed w thought. No real blind spots to complain about. The microscopic cup holders that will create a soda tsunami due to underdash placement or the center concole one that will most defeanitly start the wife complaining when you swipe it. Oct 04, 2012

hubcabs squeek, has needed new belts and water pump per mileage recommendation, needed a new alternater
nice clean appearence in and out
nice mileage of about 21 mpgs city, and little maintenance considering its age

The car isn't poorly built.. the only thing is paint. The Neon isn't the fastest but its fun to zip around in. It's pretty cheap not too expensive. I think this car is fun to drive. It could be worse.Jul 28, 2010

Its a great first time car. I love it. After 30 its pretty quick. Its a blue-ish grey color I've only seen a handleful of the same color before. Gas mileage is great about 30 to a gallon when the oil is changed (every 3000 miles). The inside is pretty nice, I try to keep it very clean.Mar 28, 2010

This car was problem free for the first 100,000 miles, but now I'm having problems with corrosion killing parts of it little by little. I do live in Michigan, so that is a problem for a lot of cars. I think this generation is the best looking Neon; the first gen was a little small and the cars at the end of the second gen had an ugly Chrysler grill. Gas mileage isn't bad, but you won't get top performance out of the car either.Jul 07, 2009

This car handles great, takes almost any turn. Corners at very high speeds with little or no skid on the tires. Although it's kinda slow right now, considering it's un-modded. I'll fix that this summer tho. Car is built pretty solid unlike the last neon I had that would make a number of rattles and squeaks with the slightest bumps. Mar 31, 2009

I had a 2001 Dodge Neon for almost four years and I have to say that this is one of the very best cars that I've driven. It never broke down and I bought it used. My Neon had cruise, power locks and windows, anti theft, and remote entry. It also had a great paint job, got outstanding mpg, and the A/C and heater worked better than any other car I've been in. I have no idea why Dodge stopped making them and would have gotten another if they still did. (Hint, hint Dodge people) Apr 26, 2008

This car is, as I said, average. Its performance is nothing to shout about, but its a 4 door compact sedan with enough room. The car is fairly reliable as long as the milage doesnt get too high (but thats true with many cars). And the styling appeals to me in a almost retro sort of way.Apr 02, 2008
