No great changes were made to the 2000 Ford Explorer; after the previous year's exterior redesign, Ford looked at its big-shouldered sport-utility vehicle and found it good. Its impressive cargo capacity (81.6 cubic feet for the four-door models) and solid roadworthiness made it the SUV of choice for hundreds of thousands of buyers.
Another selling point for the 2000 Explorer was its emphasis on safety. No new safety features were introduced for the 2000 model year, but the Explorer was already chock-full of them: from anti-lock brakes to side-curtain airbags to the Reverse Sensing System (a sonar-based array that warned of approaching objects when backing up), the Explorer was all about security.
That said, there was plenty of performance to be found in the Explorer, if that's what you were looking for. Rack-and-pinion steering and (optional) all-wheel drive made the Explorer more agile than many of its competitors. Its all-wheel and four-wheel options gave it the ability to go off-road with ease, even if most of the Explorers out there never got out of the suburbs.
Trim choices for the 2000 Explorer were the two-door Sport trim, and the four-door XL, XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited. Engine offerings included a 5.0 liter V-8 engine with a 215-horsepower output, a 4.0 liter single overhead cam V-6 clocking at 205 horsepower, and the base 4.0 liter V-6 which put out 160 horsepower.

The 95-01 explorers are the best ford produced. Roomier than the 92-94 models and easier to maneuver and see out of then the 2011-up models. Overall a solid vehicle built for going the distance. Capable of easily mounting 300, 000 miles of maintained. I prefer the leather seats over cloth cause padding is thicker. Timing chain guides tend to fail at 230K if oil not changed regularly. great camping and road trip car got good gas mileage 18 to 19mpg. 4wd was solid and gave grea handling feel. commute car was alright far trips cost gas more than a hybrid or smaller car. interior was well trimmed lots of leather.Jun 12, 2014

this has been a graeat truck my sister used for many years and had small children took this car across country works just fine still no leaks almost 9 yrs later i would recommend this car to anyone she is good on gas and always starts right up minor problems with dooor locks make it a li unberabvle after awhile but easy to fixJan 22, 2014

This car was in my family for 14 years. It had its fair share of problems, and towards the end of its life, it was in bad shape. But after all was said and done, the car served my family well :) It had almost no power, but plenty of torque. It accelerated slower than my Honda Accord 4-cyl!! The brakes felt like pushing on blocks of wood, and the handling sucked really. The build quality was not great, it had plenty of rattles and squeaks that no one could figure out. Looks-wise, it was decent... nothing special. after the warranty expired, it got expensive to maintain including $900 to fix a radiator, and $500 to fix a stabilizer bar. Now, because of this car's unreliability, it was fun to drive because I just didn't know what would happen.Dec 10, 2013

Well power wise, this truck doesnt have as much power as my 98 5.0.
Acceleration.. its 4 wheel drive.. so yeah she can get going. it has a 4.0L V6
that makes 160hp at 4,200 rpm and gets 16 miles to the gallon. it was well kept
on the inside and out besides a couple dents/scratches here and there. dark
green like my eyes(; new tires all 4. maintenance wise i just got it and they put
about 3k worth of new parts in her just for having the wrong fuel injectors in
her. :/ xD so i havent had to work on her yet. fun factor.. its just a great truck

173,000 miles and still ticking. Only car running in Chicago Blizzard (22 inches snow) in 2011. Great space for cargo. Only missing 3rd row seats. Loved the pwr lock in back, not on 2010 version.

Liked everything. Really no complaints at all. It ran well for 10 plus years. Almost no repairs were needed. Minor thermostat issues at 40K miles. That is about it. The more I think of it except for being 10 years old and looking a bit out of date it was an excellent all round car for city and highway. Feel safe in getting one.Apr 13, 2012

Loved driving this car in any weather! Never fear the rain with the new tires and size of this wonderful SUV! It has served as a wonderful second vehicle, and incredibly reliable. Low miles due to only being second owner. Very well maintained interior and exterior! The only things I didn't like about this car is the radio display doesn't work and the back wipers don't fully work. Otherwise it's a perfect truck/SUV for everyday commuting, it's surprisingly good on gas too. I highly recommend the 2000 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer. Nov 23, 2011

it is a v8 all wheel drive. th only down fall is that the cab is small, and the undercarriage is rusty. has a sticky accelerator so you have to add more pressure to it every so often. it is really fun to drive it is just the smooth leather seats are a problem when we hit a pot hole or go over a curb Nov 21, 2010

Lifted 2" all around. Brown wire modification for the 4wd. Gets about 19 miles per gallon highway. Fun to take off-road. Drives great in the snow. The only time I got stuck was because I needed new tires and couldn't get enough traction.Nov 18, 2010

After having my '96 for 5 years, it and it being my first vehicle and all, i had quite the hard time leaving it but this has been a pretty great replacement. Bought it with 92k miles. Since then I have put on new tires, new sway bar links, new tensioner pulley, new belt, new spark plugs and wires and that has been about it. It came with a 4.10 rear axle with no limited slip however a quick run to the junk yard and a days worth of work and i had myself a 4.10 limited slip. Its not great for gas mileage (19 at best on highway) but it really puts every ounce of power the truck has got down to the pavement and it will haul our 4 place enclosed snowmobile trailer loaded up and everything at 70 mph. ( I also added air shocks in the rear as well so that helps a lot with load leveling and such) Other than that, it sits well on the road, I keep er' cleaned up all the time and she looks sharp, have been EXTREMELY happy with both my Explorer's! Clock and radio display stopped working the month after I bought it. I have to keep a jar full of 7.5 fuses to keep my windshield cleaner sprayer working b/c they burn out on a monthly basis. It has good acceleration and braking, but no so good of a turn radius. The build quality is good, theres just a little leak in the vaccuum line. The maitenance cost isnt bad, gets about 15 mpg. Unbelievable value. Purchased new in early 2000 and have averaged ~18k miles per year. Repairs...minimal. Standard maintenance, two brake jobs, one suspension job, and purchased tires once. (ok, i'm cheating on this one..Ford replaced the original Firestone's at 38k miles). SUV has all the bells and whistles and is still a joy to drive. Great V8 performance, yet averages ~23 mpg on the highway and ~18 mpg overall. I got lucky on this one...this has been the my absolute best vehicle experience and value!Dec 16, 2008

This car is perfect for me! I'm an all around versatile guy who does a little bit of everything. this vehicle performs wonderfully whether i'm hauling my guitar equipment around or pulling a fishing boat. on it's own, it has great power for a 4000lb SUV, 0-60 in around 8 seconds. the suspension is a little loose but i lowered mine a few inches, with no cost for parts, and now it handles great, although the ride is slightly rougher. had the vehicle for 2 years with no major problems, this SUV is the PERFECT balance between Sporty and Utility, getting the best of both worlds. it's very fun to drive and the interior has everything i could ever need.Aug 06, 2008

Even though it is a two-wheel drive Explorer, the engine makes it a great car. The auto 'box is pretty bad and seems mismatched as when I press hard on the accelerator, nothing happens until a second before you take the pressure off. Then the gearbox shifts, so when overtaking someone in traffic the task becomes impossible. However, one can take it easy because the stereo system is superb. Reliability in the interior section has been a little rough with parts of the steering wheel breaking off and the door either not opening or not locking. The brakes seem a little hard to press down, but do give confidence in stopping power.Nov 18, 2007

Rattling noise from the undercarriage
I have a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT, 4x4 4.0 SOHC, 230,898 miles. I've noticed a rattling noise coming from the underside of the vehicle. It sounds like a piece of metal rattling inside a can. I have owned the vehicle for 2 months now. I originally thought the noise was tied to the front end squeaking, so I had that worked on. However, the rattling noise is still there. I can only replicate it when driving. It happens when you're not accelerating, going over bumps or taking a relatively sharp turn. Best results when next to a curb, going about 30-40 mph. It happens whether you're in drive or in neutral. I know it is not coming from the engine, and I have checked the exhaust, with no luck. The brakes and suspension seem fine, however I don't exactly know what I'm looking for. Any thoughts on what could be causing this issue? Thank you in advance!
