2000 Buick Regal Preview summaryImage

Often associated with elderly conservative drivers, the Buick takes a knock at this reputation with its 2000 Buick Regal, a mid-sized sedan that is also the fastest Buick on the market. Sharing a platform and many attributes with the Buick Century, the 2000 Regal is more well-endowed and a sportier ride overall. It comes in LS and GS trims, both with a 3.8-liter V6 engine and 4-speed auto tran. The naturally aspirated LS gets 195-hp, while the supercharged GS hits 240-hp with 280 lb-ft of torque and 0-60 times in 6.5 seconds. The GS features bigger 16-inch wheels and a stiffer suspension and rear stabilizer bar, all of which are optional on the LS in a Gran Touring package.

But the 2000 Regal doesn't forget about passenger comfort. Standard on all models is power features, heated mirrors, dual-zone climate control, and remote entry. The GS adds leather seats and a power driver's seat. ABS, dual front airbags, and traction control are also standard, and the GS includes a tire pressure monitor. New this year, side impact bags are optional on the GS. Other additions to the 2000 Regal include optional OnStar and standard alloy wheels. Split-folding rear seats have finally been added, to accommodate larger objects that can't fit in the 16 cubic foot trunk. If you want a sunroof, CD player, or heated seats, you have to pay extra.

The 2000 Regal definitely feels more responsive and sporty than its Century counterpart, and drivers say the GS is deceptively fast, with great acceleration. Though gas mileage suffers in the GS, the LS gets a decent 20/29. Front legroom is plenty roomy, though drivers say the rear seat can feel cramped. As for complaints, the seats could be more supportive in the GS, and there is mention of dash rattles and inadequate brake size. Owners also say the 2000 Regal is in need of an appearance update inside and out.

Other than the transmission (which some of the cost was returned to me by GM) this car hasn't had any serious issues and only a couple of minor ones. The ignition switch went out around 75,000 miles and the driver window regulator at about 82,000 miles. The original battery lasted 8 1/2 years a testament to the electrical system. Almost everything about this car is good or better. A few things are great, like comfort, cargo space and amenities. I get 29-31mpg on the highway, and average 26mpg back and forth to work in the winter and 27mpg in the summer (11 mile commute). The original 15" steel wheels and tires would squeal in any turn above 10 mph. New feet fixed that and improved handling significantly. Feedback from the road is muted by the suspension and steering and noise dampening, on the positive side the car is pretty quite going down the highway at 80 mph. Overall best car I've owned, not the most fun, not the most economical but being good in all aspects has made this car great for me.Mar 12, 2012

Not to bad of a car. Really good on handling. One thing I dont like is the maintenance and cost of replacing parts. But it is good at picking up speed when you need it haha so yeah not bad.Oct 18, 2011

It is roomy and dependable! Color is white and has some stylish rims with white lettering on the tires. Besides it being a grandma car its a very reliable car that i dont mind to drive. Gets me to where i want to go.Apr 07, 2010
