Would Not Buy Another. — I really liked the interior room and the lay out, and the power that the 5.0 produced but the mileage suffered. Needed a better transfer case design, front differential needs to be a little bit beefer. ABS too sensitive, AWD should never have been put on this rig.

Pros: Good amount of room for hauling things you don't want to get wet. Fairly comfortable for an SUV, fuel mileage not too bad.

Cons: maintance costs high, front bearings very weak and so is the front drive axle, transfer case is a real piece of junk, radio speakers in the doors were always going bad, center console covering needed to be made out of something else that was of better quality.

I Have Owned Many Suvs, This Was My Favorite, Hands Down! — Overall, I enjoy the majority of aspects of this vehicle. Cargo capacity and plenty of room, no blind spots, low-maintenance, and enjoyable drive. Again, the only negative is moderately low gas mileage: 21-24 city, and roughly 27/28 highway miles.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: I love the sporty look, along with the cage guard on front. Always handled very well on all terrains I have been on, including ice! Seats are comfortable on the daily commute and longer road trips alike. The only maintenance that has been required was the battery, tires for tread, and basic fluids and oil change. Though I have recently changed out then alternator as well, for a better and smoother run. Never had any lagging or false starts. Remarkable vehicle.

Cons: The only quality con is probably the gas mileage, given it is an SUV. When the fluids are all current it still ranks high for an SUV, but not as good as a Honda.

This Vehicle Is Great And Is Very Versatile — I really like the tape recorder on the visor for small details or grocery lists. The AWD on bad road conditions is wonderful. You don't have to think about if you need to put it in four wheel drive or not, it automatically does it for you before its too late. The V8 power is wonderful out on the road trying to pass or pulling small trailers. Over all it is a great vehicle for family or working.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: This SUV has plenty of room to take long or short trips. The leather seats are very comfortable, easy to clean and hold up to a lot of use. Gas milage is not bad. V8 motor has plenty of power out on the road or hauling a small trailer or boat. On icy roads it handles great with the AWD feature, acceleration and braking is instant.

Cons: Gas milage is low due to large engine. Averages 19 mpg

Good Awd Suv — 5.0 liter engine, 350- 400 hp, leather seats, nice acceleration, last long, 0-60 in about 6 secs, 20 mpg street, awd. minimal maintance cost, easy to drive. very comfortable to drvie. good sound system. very affordable winter car. very happy owner

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: fast, good for snow, and easy to drive

Cons: moderate rollover risk

My Ride =] — Performance is great and very smooth for a big suv. Quality is one of the best, its so much better than the new car qualities. This is like those 1970s chevelles and mustangs. Appearance is real hot in and out. Gas mileage isnt the best but its not the worst. This car is definitely fun to drive anywhere and anyday =]

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: everything

Cons: nothing

Excellent Little S.u.v.!!! — The only thing I don't like is the lack of aftermarket parts for the 5.0 liter option in this car. Getting a cold air kit and a free flowing exhaust would help the power and mileage. I have yet to find anything that I need it to do that it can't. It tows medium sized trailers easily, it pulls most anything very nicely. Service isn't a problem, oil changes are quick and easy, chassis lubrication isn't much worse, some of the grease zerks can be a pain, but not too bad. All in all, an easy to own and easy to maintain vehicle.

Pros: V-8 power with decent mileage, nice body style, not overly large

Cons: Too few aftermarket parts

Awd Uav — With the 5.0 HO motor this all wheel drive beast really is an Urban Assault Vehicle. With Leather Seats, Sun Roof, Climate control, and the Mach Stereo, this is about as good as it gets when it gets bad outside

Pros: AWD!!!

Cons: 12.2 MPG!!!

My First Company Car In The Us - 4x4 - 5.0l V8 - Ideal For Michigan Winter Driving — The 5.0L V8 engine was great although the auto transmision had a bit of lag when downshifting. As with most SUV's of that time, ride was crap (very bouncy) and handling wasn't great either as it rolled quite a bit. Was great off-road though... Unfortunately couldn't choose colour and ended up driving an ambulance...

Pros: Great engine - comfy and versatile interior - decent off road capabilities

Cons: Thirsty - fuel tank not big enough - bouncy ride

I loved my 1999 Mercury Mountaineer. She is still going with the person I sold it too. She just got a little rusty and her running boards were going, so it was time for a new one. Best vehicle to race somebody in as well. Just because she looks old, she had power! :)
