1998 Toyota Land Cruiser Preview summaryImage

The Toyota Land Cruiser got a significant redesign for 1998. Most notably, the V6 engine was swapped for a much beefier V8. The suspension was improved, the towing capacity was increased, and the body made larger. The appearance didn't change much; the 1998 Land Cruiser kept the familiar boxy shape. But the interior was updated, mimicking that of the 4Runner.

The 1998 Toyota Land Cruiser came in one, well-equipped trim level. The new engine was a 4.7-liter 230 horsepower V8. The only available transmission was a four-speed automatic, and the four-wheel-drive was permanently engaged. The '98 Land Cruiser seated five, but with the optional third row could seat up to eight. Fuel economy was about 14/16 mpg.

Land Cruiser fans were pleased with the SUV's additional power. Those who drive the 1998 Land Cruiser have little to complain about, citing the generous amount of cargo space and towing capacity, luxurious interior, and excellent handling as reasons why they love the Land Cruiser. Some do complain about the expense of purchasing and filling up the 1998 Land Cruiser, but most say its good points more than make up for it.

Summed up in the pro's and con's. We liked it so much that we kept it for 13 years and put 168K miles on it. We debated if we should keep driving it or get a new(used) one. We found a 2006 with low miles and figure we'll have that for another 150+K miles.Jul 24, 2013

Goes anywhere with no trouble -- super reliable! Has full time 4X4, so it takes a lot of fuel. We have enjoyed it for around town commuting and cross country adventures. Large capacity means everyone can go along on the trip.Jun 05, 2013

My Truck is awesome at what it is designed for and I use it for you can see me nearly any day cursing with a rack of bikes, stack of kayaks, bundle of skis or a combo of them always gets me and my mates where we need to get to. Not the best on gas mileage but its worth the trade-off. Handles like a big truck should breaks like a bus but when off road performs at it's best and haven't found a match for it. Here in NZ this is a big truck. but compared to places like the US it ain't that big but thats all good one day I will have one of those big trucks.May 18, 2010
