What owners say
"Overall, drivers are quite positive about the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, praising its reliability, performance, and comfort. Many owners appreciate its off-road capability and spacious interior. However, common complaints include poor fuel economy and some maintenance issues requiring attention, especially with brakes and the transmission."
This is a very solid car that I would recommend to anyone who asked. Mechanically, one of the best and most reliable anywhere. Good breaks, comfortable ride, and communicative steering add to this to make it a joy to drive. No problems whatsoever over the course of the 23,000 miles I put on it. If there is one drawback to owning this car, it is the poor fuel economy. I got an average of18 mpg, getting as much as 23 and as little as 13. However, I still highly recommend it as a sound, safe investment.
April 8, 2008This has been a great Jeep. Reliability has been pretty good. I've had the fuel pump go bad on me and the fan clutch and water pump, everything else has worked perfect. The transmission is starting to have a couple issues with shifting from 2nd to 3rd and it is a common problem with the vehicles but once rebuilt the rebuild kit comes with a better seal that fixes this problem. The Orvis is fun to drive in the snow and performs excellent off-road. During the summer months it is kind of bland to drive because on-road handling is weak. I would never sell it and I'm going to try to keep it going forever.
February 21, 2011I love this car. It drives smooth, it's fairly quiet, it's the sharpest turning car I've ever seen, it's built very solid, I take it out and beat the crap out of it all the time and nothing seems to really hurt it, although the paint is quite scratched. It has great suspension and it sits a fair ways above the ground, the only thing sticking out from under it is the rear differential. It's got both driver and passenger side airbags, ABS, and a reinforced body so it's safer in rollovers. Great car.

August 12, 2009Best Car I have ever owned. Very reliable and will go any where.. Rain, snow, ice, mud, deep woods, it just goes.. Pulls like a mule.. I haven't gotten stuck with it ever.. I love my Jeep. Almost no maintance even after 175,000 miles, it just keeps on going. I will by another one, but untill my 4 month old son gets his licence I will keep driving this one. I have no doupt it will last that long and longer.
November 22, 2008The car is a reliable workhorse
June 11, 2008It goes when you press the accelerator, stops when you press the brakes. V8 power when you need it, but accompanying fuel economy. Parts are cheap and easy to find. Good time off road, not too much excitement on the pavement.
March 24, 2010Best vehicle I ever owned. 31" BFGoodrich A//Ts, WAAG brush guard and side steps, AUX lighting. Great performance, comfortable, offroad worthy. Wrecked in collision with Ram 3500, (not at fualt) EMS said had I not been in such a safe vehcle, would not have walked away.
May 20, 2009This model is a wonderful combination of power and longevity both on the road and off. I opted for the 4WD Inline-6 model for the reason of the engine's reputation. The 4.0 Jeep engine has received wonderful reviews from multiple organizations and auto magazines in its time. It is a large and very functional motor providing sufficient horsepower for the classic feel of Jeep acceleration, and enough torque for a fun weekend off-road.
May 19, 2008over all i would rate this jeep four out of five stars. Looks great is outfitted with the powerful 318, 8cyl. Hwy 21mpg at approx 70 mph. Has a nice looking interior, which is comfortable aswell. All controls are easily accessible and this vehicle is a pleasure to drive. If there was one thing I would pick on the negative side is that this 97 jeep is packed full of eclectronics which tend to be on the expensive side to fix to repair so if your the handy man type this will help out a great deal.
January 8, 2012was a very dependable vehicle, did not have 4-wheel drive but with some mud terrain tires & the 4.0 straight 6 motor this thing is unstoppable! only complaint would be the gas & the constant wear of breaks, other than that it ran like a champ!
