1997 Dodge Avenger Preview summaryImage

The 1997 Dodge Avenger continues to win praise from owners who love the look and spacious interior of this 2-door coupe.

The styling on the 1997 Dodge Avenger has been tweaked in the front and rear fascias, with a retooled spoiler and fog lights, giving the car an overall sleeker look. New on the ES model are optional 17-inch aluminum wheels. The 16-inch wheels are now standard in all models.

Most notable for the 1997 Avenger is that the V6 engine is now available in both the base and ES models, and the 2.0-liter, four-cylinder five-speed manual is available in the ES. Unfortunately, if you want the increased power of the V6, 2.5-liter 163-horsepower engine, it still only comes in automatic. This is one major complaint of drivers, who want the fun of driving a 5-speed with the power of the V6.

Great handling, a fun drive, and a large interior and trunk are still big pluses. The biggest complaint remains a desire for more power to go with the cool sporty look of the car.

Performance is bad. The car is slow in stock form. Good thing there is an aftermarket! Road noise is a little loud. Not many repair needed so far. I think the looks of the car is what makes it great. Good Gas Mileage I get about 24 city and 34 highway. The car handles well, but because it is slow it's not as fun to drive as it could be.Sep 26, 2010

Only had this car for a short amount of time, but within this time it did me well. The inside was very pretty, except mine was used when I bought it. Did well in the car accident too. Only thing that went wrong was the frame got bent.Aug 14, 2009

I've just turned 188,000 miles on my Avenger. I have the manual 5-speed with the 4 cylinder 2.0 liter engine. Even with the mileage I still get 30 mpg around town and close to 40 on the road. Eat your heart out Honda owners. This car just doesn't know when to quit. Handles like a dream and does everything I've ever asked it to do. I only wish I could find another just like it for my son. I'm the original owner and, except for routine maintenance, have had very few needed repairs. It's simply the best car I've ever owned. Fun to drive and totally reliable. It may have a wide turning radius, but who cares when you can get the kind of mileage along with the eye-catching lines and the honest fun-to-drive abilities it posseses. I would NOT be willing to trade it for any other car. PS: I'm 6'3" and it fits me fine.Jun 21, 2009
