1992 Mazda Protege Preview summaryImage

The Mazda Protege received a minor styling update for 1992, with a new taillight design. In addition, a four-wheel-drive version of the Protege, which had been available the previous two years, was dropped for the lineup. Two versions of the Protege were available for 1992. An entry-level DX sedan was powered by a 1.8-liter, inline four-cylinder engine that generated 103 horsepower, while a higher-end LX trim package received the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder, but twin cams boosted its horsepower to 125. A five-speed automatic was standard for both models, while a four-speed automatic was optional. Standard features for the Protege DX included power brakes, a rear window defroster, and 13-inch wheels. The LX added power windows, power door locks, power exterior mirrors, cruise control, a tilt steering wheel, 14-inch wheels, and an AM/FM/cassette stereo system. The early-'90s models of the Protege that are still on the road now have high mileage, but for the most part drivers note that they have had only minor problems with their cars, which generally have needed only routine maintenance and repairs. The car's acceleration, handling, and comfort have been cited by drivers as positive points, while interior space can be cramped, which is in keeping with the car's subcompact nature.

The ratings are based specifically on my Protege, not the make in general. It had the capabilities of being a decent car. It ran great, would've stopped better if I could have afforded to replace all of the shocks. Mine wasn't real well cared for, so it was a real junker when I bought it... The interior was still fairly decent, but the previous owner had been in the middle of stripping it for a paint job when he sold it to me, so there was no top coat, and there were dingers all over the place. It was nice because it was still a sturdy build, not this plastic junk most cars are now. It got terrible gas mileage, but there's a pretty good chance that was because I couldn't afford to fix stuff. I do have to admit, it was one of my more fun cars!Dec 07, 2010

I was fortunate enough to find one of these hiding out at a small dealership a week ago with only 55k miles on it. picked it up at a very affordable price. I recommend this car to anyone who can find one.Mar 18, 2010

Good Performance. It will get up and go when you ask it to without muck lag time that you can get on other cars. Decent build quality. Have only need to do minor repairs to it. The lagest job I've had to do so far is replace a strut and that wasn't that bad. Good appearance. After I had the car repainted for some minor damage from the previous owner, I feel proud to own my car and would be glad to claim it as mine any day. It doesn't have the smoothest lines, but it's alright. Realitively Low Cost of ownership. Gas milage is somewhere between 25 and 35 MPG, depending on the time of year and the driving conditions. Very little for maintenance costs, minor repairs here and there. Fun Factor: I you want a cheep ride that will get you there with a little excitement this is a good choice, especially if you get the manuel trany. It will do burnouts on wetpavement easily, on dry it will squeek a little and them just take off like a rocket. Great handeling on corners.Jan 27, 2009
