Though not the big TV and movie star that its 1960s, '70s, and '80s predecessors were, the 1991 Pontiac Firebird was still sharp, aggressive, and mean. It was a fun street racer that was also generally affordable and respectable at the gas pump for a sports car. The biggest change in 1991 is the reappearance of a factory-produced convertible. Since 1969, a convertible option was only available as a dealer-installed T-top. Now it was a model in its own right, with the 3.1, 140-hp V6 engine. The 1991 Firebird saw a few cosmetic exterior changes to some of its trims. All got a redesigned front and rear fascia and smaller headlights. The Formula and Trans Am trims received a new spoiler, and the Trans Am and GTA got new taillights. The rear-wheel drive 1991 Firebird also got some engine boosts. The base model still sported a 3.1 V6 rated at 140-hp, but the V8s each got a 5-hp increase. That meant the L03 5.0 V8 was now 175-hp, the LB9 was 205, and the 5.7 V8 hit 240-hp. The Trans Am got new ground effects and bigger 16-inch wheels, while the base model featured a Sport Appearance Package that decked it out in GTA costume, including its ground effects. Firebirds are all about racing-inspired performance, and there are few other reasons why drivers buy them. Most 1991 Firebird drivers are happy with its speed, cornering, sporty handling, and engine power, though they wouldn't mind a bit more boost behind the wheel. They find the interior to be well-laid out, and the style has plenty of attitude without a hefty pricetag. Drawbacks include a tiny backseat that's hard to get out of, low ground clearance, uncomfortable seating for long rides, and noticeable rattlings. Drivers say the 1991 Firebird does not feel safe on wet or snowy roads, and the paint quality is substandard.

This is my first Firebird, first convertible too!!
2nd owner, 70,000 original motor. All stock un molested.
List of mods I plan on doing in order.
New Pioneer sound system
New paint, stock color
New soft top
New aftermarket exhaust
Complete suspension mods
New tires and rims
A super charged, liquid inter-cooled 350 TPI
That's it not really to much. just bring it up to date a little.

this car is a beast...so powerful and fast, i would def recommend it to
others because it is pretty fun. The only problem is that it uses lots gas
because of its v8 engine otherwise it is a pretty nice rideMay 01, 2011

It's my first car I built and tuned. I plan on keeping it a daily driver until I'm out of school. I've spent a lot of hours driving and tuning and have learned a lot from it. This car has served its purpose and plan on doing some more tuning later. Aug 26, 2010

Great power and is completely oblivious to large hills.
Very good looking with t-tops, eylids, and hood raise.
More fun in every mile!

I bought my car new in May 1990 and remain its sole owner/driver. It was my primary car until 1997/1998, where I bought a truck and removed it from the road (difficult - no impossible - to navigate the western PA winter roads). The car has been sitting under a cover in my garage for the past 12-13 years - only about 75,000 mi. I pulled it out about 3 years ago and it fired up almost immediately. I let it idle to get some temp in the engine, shut it down, washed it, and pulled her back into storage. It is my intention to fix the small items (left headlight won't retract, pass door outside handle, hood cylinders need replaced (hood won't remain up unassisted), hood release mechanism needs fixed, want to replace all hoses, plugs, check brakes/fluid, and flush coolant and tranny fluid).
Now that I have approached middle age (lol), I intend to only use her for casual driving on nice days. Can't wait fort that first drive !!May 14, 2010

got this car during the cash for clunkers program. if you are looking for a great performance vehicle the best option is to find a stick shift trans am for two reasons one it provides a more enjoyable driving experience. two with a stick if you are inclined to upgrade you can replace it with a 6speed out of a 1993-2002 trans am or camaro the only bad thing with these cars is the paint has issues but after almost 20 years what do you expect.Apr 02, 2010

This car did what it was meant to do. Have ok performance, while saving some fuel, (and buy in price.) It was miserable in any thing but dry roads, and reliability was an issue as were all 3rd gen F-bodies. Paint was an issue as well. It was relatively comfy, but it was in need of more room. It had enough squeaks and rattles to make even the most sane person crazy though, even after 10 minutes of driving.Oct 24, 2009

it never needed any repairs cause i was always fixing what was going wrong with the car. spent whatever money i had to on the car to keep her going. overall i would give it a 5 out of 5

I've owned this car for almost 5 years now. It was stored for the 1st 3 seasons.very rare body style, last of the 3rd gens.now a piece of auto history. This 305's still got some sac left in it. Next time around i probably won't buy one with so many power acc though. After 18 years of New England weather there aren't too many buttons that work anymore.Sep 14, 2009

This is definitly a car to have and for the price you can find
them it is well worth it.
It sounds great both the v6 and v8 models sound
awesome.
It looks ultra sleek, and even sitting still looks fast.
The acceleration on both the v6 and v8 models is out of
this world.
the v8 model will do a quarter mile in 13 seconds stock.
The braking is quality.
It handles better than most sports cars that i have driven.
The build quality is amazing and easy to upgrade.
Im a big fan of the style and the interior can look very
very sleek.
This car is great and i have a blast in it every day.May 19, 2009

This car is a very good car. i have had no major problems with it. it has good acceleration and good handling, it is a solid car, but it rides like a jeep and there is some rattle when you hit big bumps... for a V8 305 the MPG is not that bad around 20 MPG on high/city.if you like the old looking cars than the Apperance is great. sharp, and sleek looking on the inside and out. on the repair side from when i owned this car (going on 2 years) i have had to do some repairs. fuel injectors, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and O2 Sensor. i would recommend this car to a freind.Feb 25, 2009

My car is almost considered a classic in 2011. I like the way it rides because it is soo smooth and most of the time you cant really tell if your goin 25 or 75. And when you spped up to pass another car, you can hear the engine really rem and it just sounds so cool.
The performance is wonderful, except that it pulls a little to the left when braking. You can hardly tell if you are accelerating and slowing down. The gas is a little spendy though but we get a lot of miles in a tank like 246, but it sorta guzzles gas. Yes, I would reccomend this car because some of my friends are a little weird and this car is perfect for them.Oct 23, 2008

very fast car with a beautiful engine, was too fast i ended up crashing it, but it was worth the ride. body quality is good i like the exterior but interior was a bit shabby, handling was decent but as its rear wheel drive lacking a bit, gas was horrible had a 5.1 litre engine and the way i drove you could watch it go down, still though if you can afford it a fun car to enjoy as long as you know how to drive it.Sep 03, 2008

like the color/exterior but hate the inside but o well. umm the 305 is a very weak engine if you dont put any mods although it gets fairly good gas mileage for v8. I can still burn tires and drift. not as good as 80 t/a :) yup yupJul 24, 2008

I had this car for three years and would have kept it but there was an issue with it starting which no one, my father and family mechanic included, who knew what was wrong with it. It was a great car and never let me down in the long run, I would gladly get another.Jun 10, 2008

It handles very well in the corners, and stops on a dime. The seats are comfortable and everything is laid out nice and easy to reach. When the t-tops are out, driving around town is cool. Jun 10, 2008

I love my car, handles great and is alot of fun to drive! but even with the 305 HO and a full flowmaster exhaust, its pretty slow. quick enough to fight off all but the best imports, but still pretty slow. That and the tranny was built to back up a 4 banger, and even the 300ftlbs my pathetic 305 makes, it doesnt last more than a year or 2. May 28, 2008

It has great power and great acceleration. More can be asked from the breaking, but I'm happy with it. The handling, of course, isnt great due to the automatic transmission. Overall this car rocks!!!!!Mar 25, 2008

it's a very sexy car with T-Tops, it has the Formula Performance Suspension, so it handles like a dream around corners and curves, but it'll rattle your fillings out on bumpy roads.Mar 17, 2008

The firebird is sporty and fun to drive, im not very impressed with the v6, but I need a car with good gas milage. I installed a cold air intake and it seemed to breath and take off a lot better then before so overall im really satisfied with the car. Me personally I am all about the 1st,2nd, and 4th Gen firebirds, I just think the third gen is just a cheap version of the 4th gen.Jan 29, 2008

While back in the day, the firebird's performance was top, today it struggles to keep up with moms grocery getter. Doesn't get good gas mileage. It does get a lot of looks but doesn't have balls to back it up. Styling +1000. However you can pick one up for only $1k-3k. Take 5k and put an LS2 in it and you've got yourself a winner.Jan 07, 2008

Very comfortable ride with semi-decent gas mileage for a muscle car. 170hp stock but with my upgrades has around 200hp. V8 5.0L dual exhaust 305 cu in engine - durable Chevy small block out of a buick roadmaster. was made to rival the early camaro Dec 05, 2007
I drive my car for 6 months. I came home one day and went inside n20 minutes later I come out and the car would crank but not fire. Ive since learned I have no spark to the spark plugs but I do have fuel to them. Ive replaced the ignition coil, plug wires, and ignition module. I have NO idea what else it could be. HELP!!!!!
91 pontiac firebird, shuts off while driving in the hot summer months, gets about 25 miles on the highway, shorter trips to the store, it will start surgeing, seems for about 2 to 3 minutes, alot of times has a lot of pressure in the tank when taking off the cap, if you crack open the cap just a little, it takes about 2 minutes for it to stop hissing, sometimes will push fuel out, replaced computer, distributer, injectors, tps, iac, map, ignition module, plugs plug wires, put in a new 3 core radiator had a wide single, and egr, oxygen sensor, will start back up no problems when it sits for a while, any and all answers or ideas on which direction would be appreciated ,,,,lost in the woods
I have a 1991 manual transmission Pontiac Firebird with 3.1L V6 MPI engine. My dad haven't use it in year so I decided to use it, I can get it to turn over but can't get it to start. I took out the old gas and put in new gas, I check the spark plugs, replace the battery then I try starting it but pink smoke started coming out from the computer and one of fuel injectors started smoking so i replace both of them and it still won't start please help
When the car is shut off with the batterie unhooked. The gas still flows and leaks out the air intake tube. Once it dose this has to sit for a bit because the engine is like locked up. Then it will turn over and run great.
I have a 1991 pontiac firebird .31. auto fuel injected .I get spark , fuel to the fuel rail . ecm tested good . I get power to all the injectors but no pulse ? I can spray it with fuel and it it starts but stops once fuel burnt out . Any ideas ?
