By 1990, there are so many different versions and combinations of the Dodge Dakota, you need a computer-designed flow chart to keep track of them all. Long, longer, even longer? Top up? Top down? On-roading, off-roading? Smoking or non-smoking?
Where do we start? Already available in base, SE, LE, and Sport trim levels, as well as the unique convertible option introduced in 1989, the 1990 Dodge Dakota joined its competitors by adding an extended cab version, called the Club Cab. In addition to the regular cabs (112-inch wheelbase with a 6.5-foot bed or a 124-inch wheelbase with a 8-foot bed), the Club Cab came in at a whopping 131-foot wheelbase with a 6.5-foot bed, offering extra storage beneath the rear seats. Yes, it had a rear bench seat, but one can only guess this was intended for extra storage or a spot for man's best friend, as there was no door for a human to access those seats.
The Club Cabs only had 2WD, whereas both 2WD and a 4WD option was available for all other models. The convertible cab proved popular, if not practical with drivers. ABS was standard on all models. The front standard bench seat for three could be swapped out for optional bucket seats on the base or Sports models. The Shelby V8 was no longer available, so engine choices remained at the standard 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder, 99-horsepower, or the 3.9 V6, 125-horsepower with standared 5-speed manual transmission across all lines and optional 4-speed automatic.
Drivers loved the convertible option which added a feeling of sporty fun to the normally dreary task of hauling cargo. Unfortunately, this would be the last year convertibles were available. Many also praised the roominess of the cab and dependability of the Dodge name. Some thought the 3.9-liter engine was too sluggish for a pickup and complained about the wide turning radius.

1990 Dodge Dakota Sport
3.9 L V6, Automatic, 4 wheel drive.
I bought this truck new in Pittsburgh, May 1990. The little truck drove very well in the snow(s) of Pittsburgh and I once (no ‘S**T) had 2000lb of dry ice in the bed of that truck. Ok, it only travelled little more than 100 yards with it, but it did assist in keeping product cold when our freezers and refrigerators were without power.
One ton in the back of a Dodge Dakota!
The truck performed well for about 7 years and then things started to go: transmission, water pump, starter, and radiator. I keep it until November 2000 with a total of 125,000 miles.
I looked it up on Car Fax recently and it STILL has a valid Ohio registration 25 years later.
I would recommend this truck to anyone.

fast in a line, high build quality, great acceleration, not so great
deceleration (always fun to see if it stops in time), looks dusty, costs too
much to use, loud and lumpy cam, not much interior at all. not a bad

It's not extended cab but it has the extra [8 ft] long bed Previous owner most have hauled wood or something because of the location of the dents.I can't complain it get me from point A to B. mpg is good on hwy but needs over drive tranny to get great mileage for a mid-size p/uJan 18, 2011

performance was good with its V-6 automatic, build was ok the overdrive went out on it though, apperance excelent camo paint job black interior, cost very nice being 4-wheel drive, fun factor man that thing was fun fun fun never boring.Feb 21, 2010

More electrical problem then a chinese built computer. 4x4 never worked went out after two or three uses. I had the 5 speed manual and it didnt not like to down shift. The breaking was spotty at best. stearing was loose not good loose like a gm product but a sloopy loose. Overall just not pleased with this truck. Mar 11, 2009

I got this truck from the neighbor for 800 and thought that was alot at the time. The CB was the first thing to go in the truck except for gas. The pushbar I built for it and costed me 15 dollers, cant beat that Then i found a good used toolbox. After some paint in looked better and when i got the rims and new tires it looked great. Interior is basically factory expcept a 60/40 split seat i found out of a 94 and a dash cover. It has been having alot of little stuff go wrong with it but what can u expect out of a truck that has roughly 163000 miles. Aug 09, 2008

I bought this truck as a teenager. I only bought it because it had a rollbar with auxilary lights on it. I loved it for that and thats it. What blows my mind is why couldn't build anything in that generation with quality engine parts. The valve guide seals failed miserably and consumed ridiculous amounts of oil while failing e-test after e-test.Jan 27, 2008

i pulled the stock 3.9L v6 and am droping in a 5.2L 318 v8. i have rebilt the v8 and bored it 30 over, it has flat top pistons, high rise intake manifold, and a 750 edlebrok carb. i also rebilt a 727 torkflite trany.i have not done anything to the inside yet but i have big plans for it. its almost done just a few little things left tell it is running.Jan 21, 2008

How to check codes on 1990 Dodge Dakota
I'm searching for an OBD-1 code scanner that can help me to identify codes in my 1990 Dakota. On the dash, my ABS light, my Engine Maintenance light, and my E-brake light are on, but none of them should be. Id like to find a code reader, or figure out how to get those lights off my dash.
