It Just Won't Die! —

I bought my beaten up 1989 Corolla, a 5spd LE model sedan with a carbeurated 4-AF engine, for $300. The previous owner seemed to think it was on its last legs, and gave it until maybe the end of the summer. It had cooked front brakes, an exhaust leak, and would surge unexpectedly. I figured for $300, it would be the perfect summer car. I took it home and started throwing parts at it. I got new brake pads for $35, changed the oil, and changed the fuel filter. I then realized that the surging was due to poor contact on the plug wires, so I installed new plugs ($20) and a new distributor cap & wire assembly ($110). A couple months later, I had the exhaust leak patched up at an exhaust shop for $80. My total cost at this point, including purchasing the vehicle, is about $550, which I figured would be acceptable for a car that was only to last the summer. That was in May. It is now December, and that Corolla simply won't die. I have taken it with me up to northern BC, and when the weather started turning I installed a cheap battery heater and coolant heater. If it's been plugged in, it starts first crank in 30 below (although I left it unplugged for a week once and the battery froze - oops). After throwing a set of snow tires under it, it handles like a dream even in the rough unplowed roads here. Thursday, I'll be driving it back down to Vancouver. This thing is a testament to the indestructability Toyota is known for.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Indestructable
Cheap
Easy to fix
5spd transmission shifts easily

Cons: Getting up in the years
Ugly as sin

Reliable, Gutless Daily — The best thing about this car is practicality. Reliable, extremely fuel efficient (I have the 5 speed, and average 30-32 highway.. Incredible for AWD) It's not fast but it's fun to drive. Plus there's nothing like driving around in an old beat up wagon.

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: Cheap to own. Fuel efficient. AMAZING in snow and light off roading conditions.

Cons: No balls.

Buy One Build A Crazy Blacktop Or 3sgte. — It's a lot of fun to drive. You don't see them like this anymore. The engine loves to rev and I love to rev it. It's not a rocketship by any means, but it sure is a fun little car.

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: If you want to be unique opt for the first real performance 4 cylinder...

Cons: If you like resale value.

If You Find A Chance To Buy An Almost Rust Free Or Rust Free Gts, Get On It Asap, It Wont Let U Down — I love the HIGH reving 4age engine, the sleek body lines, its pretty quick, but lacks top end performance. It rarely ever needs fixing, but when stuff does break, its really easy and cheap to fix, for the most part. Exterior styling is awesome, the "body kit" trim the GTS model has really ties the body to gether, the interior is eh, the driver seat is awesome, fully adjustable. The shifter is vary easy to shift with, and the e-brake is easy to grab hold of. It also lacks in how well it is for gas mileage, its actually terrible, but that could be my heavy driving?... haha And the fun factor of this thing is a 15/10 star, its small, has a 5spd. and a decent engine.

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: two door, five speed, quick, reliable, sleek, awesome .

Cons: gas mileage, tire consumption, back seat is tiny, no leg room back there.

Great Oldie For Conservative Drivers, Requires Only A Little Care To Stay In Top Condition! — I have a manual transmission in my little Corolla, and out of all the manuals I've driven, it is by far the easiest and most tolerant, so it's a great 'learner' car. The acceleration is slow but smooth. The car can't really go above 75mph, but it handles great -- can make a quick lane change, u-turn, etc very quickly in a small amount of space. And since it's so light, well-maintained brakes work great (smooth and relatively fast braking). The gas mileage is fantastic -- if I'm driving conservatively without many passengers or cargo, it regularly gets 34+ in the city, up to 40 highway driving. Repairs are infrequent--just the normal by-mileage maintenance. The boxy appearance is acceptable because the car looks compact (instead of clunky, like an old Oldsmobile or something). It's not the prettiest car ever, but it's sturdy. The previous owner of my car got t-boned by an SUV going 40 and the passenger didn't even get scratched--the door merely got dented in!

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Sturdy, needs little maintenance, small turning radius, compact, light, handles well

Cons: Nowadays, hard to find replacement parts; not for the fast driver

First Car...first Love — What can I say...tough as nails. It had manual everything...but that's what gave this car character. It was a car that you actually drove...because you did everything yourself...no automatic tranny to prevent you from stalling, no Dynamic Driving aids, no power steering to help you turn the wheel.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Buy it if you enjoy driving.

Cons: Avoid it if you're drive like a g....

Best Money I Have Spent All Year! — I have had my corolla for a year and drive it daily in NYC. It is the perfect size for parking in tight spots. I recently had the all the body work restored and car repainted to its original color. I always get smiles from the parking lot attendants and heads turn because the car looks so clean for a daily driver. It starts up fast in the winter and the heater blast so much heat. In the summer I get an "ice cream headache" because the air conditioner gets too cold! I have all the repairs done at the manhattan dealership and very reasonalble to maintain.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Easy to park, Lots of headroom for guys over 6ft tall

Cons: Acceleration on to highways is slow.
