Only a brief time on the market, the Dodge Lancer was a roomy, mid-sized 5-door hatchback that served as a good economy car. For those wanting a bit more thrill behind the wheel, the turbo models were much speedier (though suffered from turbo lag), but less fuel-efficient. 1989 was the last year the Dodge Lancer was produced.

The 1989 Lancer came in three trims. Base and ES models started with the 2.2-liter, 97-hp I4. Other engine options included a 2.5-liter, 100-hp I4 and a 2.2-liter, 146-hp Turbo I. A 5-speed manual was standard and a 3-speed automatic optional. The third Lancer trim was the speedy Lancer Shelby, which featured the 2.2-liter I4 with an intercooled Turbo II, easily hitting 175-hp. It was paired only with the manual transmission, but offered a sports-tuned suspension, lower ride height, two rear spoilers, and more standard interior features. Only 208 Lancer Shelbys were produced in 1989.

Drivers obviously loved the power and performance of the turbo Lancers, particularly the Lancer Shelby. Most owners feel their Lancers are reliable and very sturdy, with comfortable seats. The Shelby can ride a bit rough.
