1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Preview summaryImage

The 1988 Monte Carlo would be the last of the mid-size Chevies produced until they returned in 1995. All 1988 Monte Carlos were actually built in 1987, and featured much smaller production numbers and few stylistic changes. Only 13,970 LSs were produced along with 16,204 SSs.

And where was the popular Aerocoupe which had gained such respect among racing circles? It had now provided the basis for the Lumina and was no longer needed by Chevy. Luckily, the SS still had a powerful engine: the 305-ci V8 HO rated at 180 horsepower. The base engine for 1988 was a 262-ci V6 rated at 140 horsepower, with the standard LS V8 engine being a 305-ci rated at 150 horses.

The last G-body was a silver SS coupe which rolled off the line on December 12,1987. No more Monte Carlos would be produced until the 1995 models began to roll in late 1994.

I love Monte Carlos, until they became front wheel drive, and smaller. Even wrecked this car drives great, but being a LS it handles soft in corners, with a 305 it is a little under powered a nice fuel injected 350 would be nice, but when you build it your self you know what you have, this one has a 99% chance of being a parts car for my 1979 Monte with t-tops, sad really.Oct 25, 2010

Performance - acceleration, breaking Build Quality - solid, needed new heating core, bad ground wire on head lights, rattles Appearance - exterior is sporty inside is conferable Cost Of Ownership- Gas mileage, maintenance, snow tires if needed, bought for 8,000 dollars. Fun Factor - very fun to drive, very fast, stands out in a crowd. Sep 23, 2008

This is an all around great car, its got a chevy small block, a 305 to be exact, its an LS but still has the 5.0L V8, and it sits on the SS Suspension. only 64,000 miles on it too! This car is a perfect first car for a guy like me.Jul 30, 2008
