Love The 4runner ! — For my use , which is mostly as an off roader and commuter , it's power is enopugh . i don't tow anything bigger than a utility trailer . Off road , it's hard to beat ....the locking hubs and low gearing make it possible to go just about anywhere ! I have pulled-out at lest 2 dozen bigger, stronger, faster, fancier supposed 4x4"s . despite my constant off-roading , the on-road handling is great.Build quality speaks for itself....besides rust on a 25 yr old vehicle , i have only replaced maintenance items . The appearance is .... i would say popular ,i get comments on my beat-up old 4runner all the time , I would assume though because of it's 4x4 prowess and durability. fuel economy ...i average 7dollars per hour off road .This is a fun vehicle to own , the top comes off , it seats 5 , and can go allmost anywhere . Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)
Pros:
Overall the 83-89 4runner is my favorite vehicle ,good on gas ,no major repairs , open-air driving ,seats 5 ,not much bigger than a quad, and gets me allmost everywhere in the mountains around home. The only drawback is the limited availability....HELLO TOYOTA ! A top off new 4runner would be nice ! Cons: they don't make them anymore ! HELLO TOYOTA ! |

I Will Not Sell This Car As Long As I Can Fix It - So Far So Good! — This is the only new car I've ever bought because it has been a great drive. When new the only problem was faulty thermostats - once I swithed from Toyota replacements no problems. Head gaskets went on mine about every 115000 miles. You should replace timing chains each time. Replace oil pump around 250000. That's where I'm at now. I fixed the little rust spots before they got out of hand. New paint when it was 17 years old and the unit looks great. Was asked just last year where I got my "new" SUV. It's been a great ride! Good gas mileage. I did have to rebuild the automatic 4 wheel drive self-locking hubs after my daughter used the "truck" for 3 years. Primary Use: Family transportation Pros: Timeless looks Cons: Can't outrun the small guys -power issues |

I Love It — this is the best truck i have ever had.its great off road. it gets decent mileage.gets lots of looks.easy to work on.i am big into 4x4's and i had a built 04'jeep tj that was awesome, this toyota is stock and has done the same things as the jeep and some the jeep could not.i am having an electrical issuue right now(i put it under 4' of water) but i still done want to sell it.i love it. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) Pros: way too much to list Cons: i dont like the IFS. it would be much better with a solid axle up front like the 85' |

My 4runner — when i got mine I had to replace the timing chain, but after I got that done and got the timing right it runs like a champ. Easy to work on and a blast to drive and parts arent that expensive either Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) Pros: easy to work on, cheap parts, and they're found all over the place Cons: still trying to fix it |

Ya?!?!?! — slow most all repairs are tough b/c its so tight in engine compartment. gas is ok for a truck with 31s but not good for a 4 cyl. really boxy but plenty roomy on the inside. fold down seats are nice Primary Use: Commuting to work Pros: only on that runs currently Cons: old haa |

Not To Bad Of A Car — Alright, the 4Runner is a different story. I really didnt mean to buy it, I just did. I needed a car to get back on my feet when I moved to Alabama. Bought it in 2007, so that would have made it 20 years old at the time. MAN, It look sawsome: has oversized tires on it, 3 inch lift kit, and everything on it. However, I am having some MAJOR engin problems with it; crapping out. On top of that, my sunroof blew off: just poof. On the freeway, during a rainy day: of all days. Pros: Love the looks of it Cons: All the different problems I am having. |

Can't Kill It — This truck just won't die. 220,000 miles (as of fall '08) and doesn't give me any crap no matter how far I drive. Does several 1000+ mile trips per year. Offroads like a dream. What she lacks in HP she makes up for with torque. I've taken this baby through places and watched full size Broncos get stuck behind me. Pros: Just won't die Cons: Only gets 18mpg |

Cult Favorite With 4x4 Crowd — Great little runabout 4x4 cult favorite for a reason. 400 000kms on the clock and still rocking strong. Despite me beating it silly, freezing it into lakes in the winter and dragging it out a month later. 22re engine, a little weak, but 4wheeling doesn't need the same kind of power as towing. i would get another one, loved that the top comes off. Pros: unbreakable convertible 4x4 Cons: a little slow on the highway, passing uphill on a mountain is impossible. |

First Car. — Hot rod red. 4-inch lift kit. 4-wheel drive. Could go up any hill and over any obstacle off-road. Great car until I totaled it. 4-cyl engine would probably be saving me money on gas right about now... Pros: Well-built and reliable. Great off-road. Cons: Not much power. Old model would be difficult to find with low mileage. |

Atom!!! — Atom is named Atom because it had a very annoying security system that would just not shut up!!! It kept going off and drove me up a wall. I paid 500 for it with a blown engine. As you can see, i installed a new engine and got it running again. I sold it to my dad for 4500 dollars and he is still driving it around. He didnt take the time to break the engine in properly so who knows how long it will last. How sad!!! It was on its 3rd engine in just 177,000 miles, too! Pros: Good looking vehicle and lots of features and potential for this vehicle. had the sensors inside that would tell you the body roll and the angle of departure and approach. Cons: Weak underpowered 22RE(even bored out to .0030 over!) with a performance valve job and the works. Strange little truck!!! sometimes it would say that it was overheating due to a faulty sensor on the engine and that was a scary thought. Lady told me it had a good transmission but it ground going from 3rd to 2nd gear! Overall a automic bomb waiting to go off, so its named Atom. |

Takes off when you want to but has a quiet engine. More fun to drive than any pickup I’ve ever been in. Audio/navigation screen is easy to use and to see. Very smooth, even at 95 mph. Read More
