Viva The Cartoon Car! — The one Porsche I own that always gets smiles and waves, never middle fingers. I feel like I should wear gloves and a driving cap when I drive it, but then I'd probably get that middle finger, and well-deserved... It is in very nice condition, not a garage queen, though I need to drive it more. And with A/C that actually keeps you cool, it's kind of unique for 914s...

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: light, nimble handling with vintage appeal

Cons: most of them are rusted out and abused

914 — one of the lightest cars available in north america! Targa topped vintage Porsche with ability to put up to a 98 911 engine without much modification! Did I mention, vintage Porsche with greater parts availability that a camaro! Love it!

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: fun, fun, fun

Cons: awkward looks

She May Not Be Perfect, But I Wouldn't Rather Have Anything Else (except Maybe A Lotus!) — Handles like a Dream, and most fun to work on! This thing eats corners for breakfast. The engine can be pulled in about an hour, and lots of aftermarket parts and upgrades are available (has a great enthusiast's support network). But, it's a money pit as far as maintenance goes. The engine parts are standard VW (unless you have the Porsche 6-cyl.), so that stuff is cheap, but everything else is vintage porsche!

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: High-speed hairpin turns

Cons: Mechanic's special, and not cheap

Gokart-like Ride — Handles well, fun to drive. Power is not great, but considering how light the car is, the little four cylinder works well. Lots of trunk space for a two seater.

Pros: High Fun factor.

Cons: Rusts in the most inconvenient places.

Stock: Too Gutless Race: Defies Laws Of Physics — I built a race car with this 914. When it was stock, it was completely gutless and lots of body roll. A full roll cage stiffened up the chassis weakness. Race suspension tightened the car up to nearly no body roll, rails through corners (race tires of course).

Pros: Ultra light 1900lbs, excellent braking/cornering.

Cons: Not enough horsepower and a V8 would throw off the balance.  A turbo
charged 6 would be awesome in this car.

My 1974 Porsche 914 1.8 — This was my brother car in California that he got around 1985. My father drove it to Philadelphia in 1988. The car has a 1.8 litre motor with fuel injection. Port fuel injection was rare in the 1970's. We put a front sway bar in the car after I autocrossed the car for a year. You can see the sway in the racing photo.

Pros: Very High Tech for 1974.  Great handling.

Cons: Too High Tech for 1974.
