The 124 Spider — It is easy to fall in love with the 124 Spider. The car handles and sounds great, the front seats are comfortable and the cockpit is well-provided with gauges and real wood. Unfortunately the build quality of this era of Fiats is the reason the company left the US market. The cars were notorious for rusting out at the wheel wells and frame, and parts would simply fall off. For all its great styling and road feel - it was under-powered by half. The example in the picture is an extremely rare 1974 1/2 split bumper model with 23,000 miles.

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: Incredible Italian Styling and an iconic little european sports roadster. Great handling and exhaust sound.

Cons: Italian build quality was not quite what came out of Germany; Prone to rust; Under-powered for it's looks and exhaust sound.

Great Around Town. — Fun little convertible just for the run to the beach or a casual drive. Not the fastest or most comfortable but definitely fun. There are many newer cars that are in the same price range as these but they aren't a Fiat Spider.

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: Fun little convertible

Cons: No storage and a lack of power for any useful road trips.

Fiat 124 Spyder Review — It was a wonderful machine, but the bodywork was lousy and I had to redo the interior (vinyl) seats because they were made out of defective material. But you see it was pre-emissions so it was eady to work on. I took the valve covers off (it had dual overhead cams). The engine was the same one in a Lancia Beta Scorpion.

Pros: Wonderful engine

Cons: Bad Body work--rusty

Great Entry Level Italian Sportscar — My Fiat 124 spyder was my first car. It came as a project and needed lots of work but eventually was done and painted Ferrari red. They are great looking cars, especially with the early chrome bumpers. With cams, and hi-comp pistons they'll go like crazy. Reliability wasn't too bad, lots of fun.

Pros: Italian design

Cons: Italian sheetmetal
