The Toyota Celica was completely redesigned for 1986. The biggest change was that the Celica was now a front-wheel drive, much to the chagrin of drivers who loved how the rear-wheel drove. The body was also restyled as sleeker and rounder. The front-wheel drive did create more interior space, but the back seats were still cramped.
The 1986 Celica's engine was actually demoted to a 2.0-liter, but with 116 horses it was noticeably more powerful. The coupe and the hatchback were all available as the ST, GT, or GT-S models. The convertible came as a GT. The GT-S engine got an upgrade to 135-horsepower.
Although some found the new front-wheel-drive Celica not as much fun to operate, it was still a very popular car. Because of its quality Toyota engine, many are still driving theirs to this day. The 1986 Toyota Celica has excellent cornering ability, accelerates quickly off the line, and handles well even at high speeds, making it very popular for racing.

I loved everything about this car except for the fact that it was FWD. It was quick, good gear ratio and light. It was purchased 8 years before it was given to me by my dad for $1500 and I sold it last year for $1500. It had a 3S-GE and that thing loved to rev.Feb 15, 2011

I bought my white Celica GT hatchback 5-speed manual new and it has been a great car. It has taken me on cross county trips and it is fun to drive. It is probably the most comfortable long haul car I've ever owned. But, alas, I have to get rid of it.
I have it garaged now and need the space back. This car has had all the routine maintenance over the years and the engine has about 150,000 miles on it. It sat in the driveway for a year before I moved it into the garage. It needs a new battery but it does crank well so with a little tinkering it should start with fresh gas. Everything works except the air conditioner. The wheel wells are rusted out and the breaks probably will need new wheel cylinders, but the interior, is clean and the roof, hood, hatch, doors, electrical parts (lights), engine and tires are still in great shape. This would make a great project car work/school car, or you could part it out. Clear title. Never wrecked.Jan 12, 2011

Car looked great but turned out to have quite a few mechanical problems! Clutch needed doing and it had an idle control issue which were very expensive to fix. Fun little cars to drive though, this was my second one. Bought it cause the first one was so reliable.Aug 26, 2010

Sep 05, 2008

Performance- This little 103KW machine was definatley Quick. It had plenty of get up and go. Acclerated good off the mark and only climbed with ease. With 320,000km on it, it was just as perky as when i bought it.
Build Qulaity- Well needed to replace the clutch and Struts, but generally held up good. Bit of trouble with the air flow meter and fuel filter.
Appearance- Had a couple of bumps wen i bought it. Added the wing too.
Fun Factor- What can i say. It was my second car and i had it for 6 years. I miss driving it!Aug 13, 2008

It was cheap on initial cost and repair. Smelled pretty icky until
I ripped out the majority of the interior in the rear (due to the less than optimum condition it was in safety, smell, and otherwise) and some in the front (again due to broken and no longer functioning parts), and because of this... well, this substandard (in today's industry) car became a little more fun to drive (sure, it was lacking many amenities, and I had to enter it when i locked myself out by a screwdriver in the trunk)
actually outrunning some modified civics! HAHAHAHAHA!!!
the tranny was pretty much damn near bulletproof, and the motor, though not in the best condition aesthetically, was running strong for it's age (by the time I got it, it was already 18 years old ^^)! Not surprising though, because it is a TOYOTA!!! =DJul 31, 2008

I love my toyota celica! Speed of a sports car but the mpg of a nice sedan! Man oh man it can take sharp turns at high speed without a problem. Dec 03, 2006
Greetings: I have a 1986 Celica GT Coup. I have the new Tensioner and Timing Belt but need the instructions and diagram to install them, and adjust the timing afterwards. Where can I find said materials. Thanks, Brett
Put in a new higher performance clutch, plugs, cap, rotor, and wires. Still have no spark or fuel from the fuel pump. Also swapped the ignition coil and ignitor and still nothing. Someone said it might be my distributor but the pick up coil tested out good. Might still do a swap and see what happens.
The car starts right up,but I have to keep giving it gas,or it wil stall out. As long as I keep the RPM'S up,it won't stall. It's a manual transmission, so I have to take it out of gear, or keep the clutch pushed in,so it won't stall out. Once it warms up it runs really rough. Not sure if it has to do with the fuel system or maybe the distributer cap, rotor and plugs. Any suggestions??
