The 2002 Ford Escape continued to target younger drivers looking for a smaller, more nimble, zippier SUV. Among competitors in the compact sport-utility vehicle class, though, the '02 Escape offered a roomier-than-average passenger and cargo capacity.
Under the hood, the '02 Ford Escape offered the 2.0 liter, 4-cylinder Zetec with a 130-horsepower output. Buyers could upgrade to the 3.0 liter, 24-valve Duratec V-6, clocked at 200 horsepower and 200 lb.-ft. of torque.
Trims available on the 2002 Escape were the XLS and XLT; four-wheel drive was available as an option on both trims. ABS front-disc brakes gave the Escape great stopping power, and optional front-side airbags added security. Even with 4WD and all the extras, though, the 2002 Escape wasn't a great off-road vehicle. The Escape's real appeal was to drivers looking for reliable transportation and fuel efficiency.

A pretty good small SUV overall. Could have better gas mileage, but for 4WD, not bad. On recommendation of a friend, I stuck a K&N high air flow filter in there for improved mpg. It did help - maybe adding another 1 mile mpg. I like that it is high off the ground, but not too high so that an elderly passenger can't get in. Wish there was a wee bit more clearance from top to bottom interior on the hatchback with rear seats folded down.Dec 20, 2014

I loved how spacious and open it was, it road very well, etc
I disliked the low mpg.
But all over it is an amazing great first car, and or family car. Good for teenagers, easy drive, and is great off road.May 30, 2013

Still Has Pick-Up. She's Is Very Dependable, Great Vehicle, Very Fun To Drive.
The Gas Mileage Is Decent. I Love It. Plan On Keeping It For About 1 - 2 More

We are the second owners of our Escape. At 118,000 miles, we have not invested more than $500 in normal repairs for wear and tear. The gas mileage is pretty good and the V6 engine is 'peppy'. It handles "average"; not sporty. Great smaller SUV for those who want something reliable and safe, that won't break your bank account.Aug 13, 2011

Tons of power from the 3 Liter V6, decent fuel economy. SUV space and traction with turning radius and exterior size of a compact car. Tons of electrical issues, though the stereo is fantastic. The loaded XLT has decent interior quality, though the leather is cheap.Jan 26, 2011

This has been a great running car for me. It drives wonderful in Ohio's weather. Just had a tune up and oil change 01/07/2011. There is some minor rust in a couple places but overall condition is good. It has been good to me.Jan 13, 2011

Have had it 7 years, and no major problems. Came fully loaded back then. It has enough pep. Not to big, not too small. Only downside is my interior door panels are comming off, could be from the Texas heat? Only repair I've had was my shift cable broke, few hundred to fix, but hey it's 7 years old... It is starting to ride a little rough, and the cabin is not the quietest. I did do some long trips, and used it everyday for home health, so I probably was a bit rough on it. Now has 115+ miles and I'm ready to upgrade. Have test drove the 2010 and they are much improved. Even if they don't exactly wow me.Nov 28, 2009

Everything is great with the car-great quality, runs well, nice and high off the road. Handling is good. Has a few scratches here and there from rocks coming up off the road, but overall in great condition. Beautiful car, I keep it well kept.Sep 18, 2009

My car is my baby i love it i love driving it looking at it and cleaning it I know my car inside and out and i love it ! Only one thing just because it is 4WD doesn't mean it can go mudding !!! you will fry the alternator if you do that trust me, i was dumb enough!Sep 15, 2009

Fast V6, Performance great.
Never needed repairs for squeaks or rattles.
Appearance in and out great.
gas... bc of V6 I did spend $$ on it.
was fun to drive, but not enough room inside for me.

Love it, wish it was newer and had a little better gas mileage but overall, it beats the last piece of crap that I owned... (did not list that one, cuz I hated it). i'd buy another one in a heartbeat. The main thing is that I have room for my Great-Grandson's car seat with room for 3 other people besides me! Wanted to get a 4WD for the winter and the wife wanted a Jeep but Ford Escape had better ride quality and Explorer was too big. Good car overall, nothing brilliant, but nothing bad, cheap on gas, good visibility, comfy on long journeys.Jul 05, 2009

good little SUV. Excellent in the snow. Is a truck and handles like one - rather than a sportscar. Well built, no body issues. Had some water leakage on the insude which took some time to figure out and ended up the liner had pulled away from the door frame. Nice looking truck and well thought out on the inside. This vehicle is very sharp and popular with the color. It is solid in the handling and never had any hints of it tipping, the upkeep is simple as long as you do regular ooil changes and tires. this car can go up the beech easily and travel for hundreds of miles without any problems.Jul 10, 2008

This Vehicle was GREAT on Gas, even with the 3.0L V6. I was getting on average about 20-21 miles to the gallon (Depending on how I drove) May 14, 2008
