[Edit] Hyundai dresses up the exterior of the Accent to distinguish it from its Rio twin, but like that car, the 2008 Hyundai Accent is a basic affordable subcompact with few bells and whistles. It is a commuter car for first-time buyers or those on a budget, functional for getting you from point A to B. Offered as either a hatchback (GS or SE) or sedan (GLS), all trims carry a 110-hp, 1.6-liter I4 and choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.
The Accent was recently updated, so there are few changes in 2008, but they are some nice ones. All trims with a CD player will be equipped with MP3 compatibility, and XM satellite radio is now standard across the line, including the base GS hatch. The 2008 Accent starts out with 14-inch wheels, a tire monitor, 8-way manual front seats, and a radio. Moving up to the GLS adds air conditioning and CD player, and the top-line SE offers power features, front and rear intermittent wipers, 16-inch wheels, and a rear spoiler. Though all models come with six airbags and a tire monitor, previous Accents earned less than stellar crash test ratings. The 2008 Accent has not yet been rated. 4-wheel disc brakes are standard, and the SE gets ABS.
Though it fits four, like most subcompacts the rear seats are cramped. Trunk space starts at 12.4 in the sedan and 15.9 in the hatch, with folding rear seats. Another nice feature is a fold-down rear armrest with cupholder. Decent 27/33 gas mileage and the 100,000-mile/10-year warranty are appealing to budget drivers, but like most small cars with a small engine, there is some noise and labored action when accelerating.
