CarGurus' 2000 Audi A6 Review

More power, more power, more power!  Audi heard the shouts across America and tried to pacify hungry customers by introducing two new engines to its lineup in 2000.  New in the 2000 Audi A6 is a 2.7 twin-turbo, 250-hp engine and the 4.2-liter, 300-hp V8 engine borrowed from the Audi A8.  These engines are only available with a 5-speed Tiptronic and only as a sedan.  The A6 wagon keeps the 2.8-liter, 200-hp V6, which is also available in the base sedan.

Also new for 2000, quattro is standard in all models except for the base sedan, where it remains an option.  Tiptronic is standard as well, though a 5-speed manual transmission is offered with the A6 2.8s.  Stylistically, the 2000 A6 remains the same, though the 4.2 sedan had to be lengthened somewhat in the front and the fenders restyled to accommodate the bigger engine.  Inside, the same quality Audi features dominate, wrapping owners in a luxurious, comfortable, quiet ride with well-laid out knobs and displays.  Ample leg and headroom and dual front and side airbags ensure a safe and enjoyable ride.  In the 4.2, the rear seat has been reconfigured with bucket seats, suitable only for two instead of three passengers.

Drivers and experts agree the 2.7T is the top choice of the 2000 Audi A6s.  It is more responsive and quicker off the line than the 4.2 and feels more like a rocket beneath your feet.  Though it has more body roll, Audi engineering provides a firm suspension and confident steering so that the driver never feels out of control even when blowing past comparable mid-size sedans on the highway.  Owners also love the elegant interior and the increased horsepower of the 4.2, as they've been complaining for years about the lack of zip in the A6.  With the two new engine choices, Audi owners have oomph to go along with the snazzy style and quality performance.
