CarGurus' 2004 Kia Amanti Review

An upscale luxury Kia.  No, that is not a misprint.  In 2004, with an eye to expanding its consumer base beyond college students and recent graduates, Kia introduced the 2004 Amanti, a full-size luxury sedan based on the Hyundai XG350.  Four inches longer, the 2004 Kia Amanti is quite spacious for four passengers, and offers the most legroom in its class, topping the Accord and the Avalon.  It also comes with a lot of standard features that are only options on similar full-size sedans.

Outside, the 2004 Amanti is a blend of every European car, and sports a wide maw of a grille.  The rear doors are long and have ample headroom, making access easy even for tall people.  The Amanti comes in only one trim, with a 194-hp, 3.5-liter DOHC V6 and a 5-speed auto tran with manual mode.  The Amanti is well equipped with full power features, power front seats, wood trim, wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, ABS brakes, and a whopping eight airbags for both rows.  Other performance and safety features, such as traction and stability control, are offered as options.  Packages tack on heated leather seats, a 6-CD player, sunroof, trip computer, and memory settings.

Despite all its trappings, the Amanti is still less expensive than comparable luxury sedans.  Keeping the price down, however, means it doesn't offer as much optional equipment, such as a navigation system.  But it does come with Kia's well-known warranty.  Because it is longer, wider, and heavier than the XG350, the 2004 Amanti also suffers from worse fuel economy, at only 17/26 mpg.  This is a gripe with owners, who also feel it's very underpowered and the suspension too soft.  High points include the ample cabin and trunk room, a quiet smooth ride, the stylish exterior that draws many compliments, and overall comfort.
