my 1998 mercury sable was running fine then started to smoke and i pulled over turned car off now when i go to start it all it will do is click.

Oil in the engine doesn't matter if the oil pump stops working. Did the engine get louder or knock and/or make any loud rattling sounds before or when it started smoking?
