I have a 98 mercury mountaineer how would I
know if the AWD is out and how hard is it to
fix it and can you still drive it if it is out

The 4x4 and ABS light will be lit up on the dash and you would have traction problems. A good mechanic can inspect the system. To fix could be as easy as a sensor to a transfer case.

One way to test an AWD system is to find a patch of gravel road. Stop and then floor it to see if you get traction in the front tires.
